I got a question about homes in your old area. I got a friend that lives by the Cinci airport, in Northern KY. He pays dirt cheap taxes but tells me the housing crisis has hit his area hard. Lots of forclosures on his street filled with newer homes. He now tells me that lots of section 8 people have been moving into these forclosed homes and his home value has fallen because of it. He's not very happy about this. Is this common?

sick of the winter is on a distinguished road
Not sure which area he'd be in...The surrounding area of the airport is pretty big...There are several towns that border the airport..

The most recent real estate search I did only showed a couple houses for sale in the area we were interested in... The largest town, (florence) has a lot of homes for sale. But in the 250K range I would say no.. But there are many neighborhoods that have home values in the 100K range. There are also towns closer to the river/city that have more of an urban feel and may have more section 8 occurrences..

Home values have been hit a bit harder down there but nothing too dramatic compared with Rochester. Also with the airport being a huge employer, and with all the cutbacks in the airline industry, especially with Delta and it's regional affiliate Comair, many people have been losing their airport jobs.

People in this forum are ALWAYS comparing places like Rochester and Buffalo, with larger metros. Find comparable metros, and you'll find that in the end, many are way more affordable, and offer the same or more/better amenities, without the hassle of living in NY.

I've lived in other comparable metros. I havn't found there to be that much more of a hassle.

Comparing NY to NC as I ususally do. My house costs as much as my apartment did in NC with taxes, and that was a cheap apartment. The renting policies are not the much different except that you have to get a credit check for most places down there.

NC technically has two DMVs, one to take care of your license the other to take care of registration, you can't goto one place to do all. You also have the nice licence plate sticker that much get replaced yearly. The titles have to be notarized.

I don't see a difference with the amenities, the apartments were more or less the same and really depended on who you rent from. I found the illegal immigration and constant traffic jams to be a big problem. Everything requires driving, and mostly shopping at chain stores.

Just another fallacy.

I usually compare this place to larger metros since they are the only ones to offer similar amenities/culture.
I've found similar sized places down south or in the midwest to be much inferior for my tastes.

It's pretty clear you've never lived anywhere else.

The Raleigh-Cary MSA in North Carolina is actually a little smaller than the Rochester MSA; and more expensive. The only thing really more expensive in Rochester is property taxes and gas; but considering you have to use a lot more gas down there to drive around more often and further; I would actually spend MORE on gas per week down there than up here. Taxes aren't everything. Yeah, they are way too high here and need to be lowerd or at hte very least capped; but its STILL not expensive to live here compared to most metros even the same size.

Absolutely correct. It is always the complaining about the taxes in Rochester and it just doesn't add up when you go to other areas and see the cost of housing. Taxes are just PART of the cost of living and the cost of living in Rochester is certainly less expensive in comparison.
I would like to know in what other areas some of the other people have lived that they still find this to be untrue and again,I just don't understand why people in Rochester continue to WANT their city to be unaffordable,as though that is a good thing?
It is so confusing.
That is a great positive thing about Rochester,it.is.inexpensive.
Why the arguement about it all the time? It is a GOOD thing

Some people just REALLY like to complain. If they can find something to complain about and blame their unhappiness and need to complain on the area they live; they don't have to deal with the fact that they personally are the ones with the problem. Pretty sad actually.

If you don't mind me asking, what city do you live in?
