Does anyone know anything about renting houses? (Rochester: rental homes, MLS)

I want to rent a small house for a year or two just to facilitate filtering out my stuff and selling the house that I have. I'm an East Sider and I don't have a passport, so I'd probably prefer to stay over here.

I never see houses for rent but I often hear of people renting them.

What do they know that I don't know?

When I moved out of Rochester, I looked up rentals on realtor.com. But I just tried it for the Rochester area and did not come up with any rentals. Strange!

But, go to google and type in rental homes and a lot of rental websites come up.

What kind of house are you looking for and in what sort of time frame?

Time frame is tough because I'm pretty shaky on the whole idea. It's something I need to do but I'm dreading it. It would be nice to get this done before the end of the year. It wouldn't be in Summer.

I want small. I want quiet, although I'll make noise sometimes with power tools or saxophones. I like having an upstairs but this is temporary so I could pass on that. Clean basement (for the power tools). Musty mildewy smell is absolutely no go. I like urban but don't like to be burglarized too often.

Craig's list seems to have some house rentals that don't show up in MLS listings. But you could ask a realtor to send you listings, too. They tend to be expensive but if I were renting my house I prob. would want to go through a realtor, too. I wondered if some could be bargained down. I think it's the type of thing you have to watch every week and you could come up very lucky.
