Personally I like Olcott the best. The beach is located inside a small town that supposidly used to have a large hotel and docks for people coming to the area.

Anyway, there are plenty of small shops, restaurants, ice cream etc.. The town also does some small festivals. There are a couple of parks inside the town across from the lake where you can do picknicks and bbqs. From Buffalo you take rt78 north, from Rochester I think you take rt104 east until rt78.

There are many other beaches too, Parks | Monroe County, NY should get you started.

Hamlin Beach State Park is OK. Haven't been there in a long time, but, the water was always clean.

Isn't Charlotte closed right now because of bacteria in the water? Or was it closed recently?

I vacation up at Hamlin Beach and love that place. Its a great park and never really crowded. The campgrounds a good one also although the park rangers can be a little annoying. Clean water and friendly people.
