What's Up with the Segregation Here? (New York, Rochester: home, neighborhoods, high school)

I just moved here from El Paso, TX. I am very surprised that a very uneducated city can be more open-minded than a city with many learning institutions.
One cannot pretend it doesn't exist, it's in your face. It seems the neighborhoods are ethnically separated as well too.
I lived in Boston 13 years ago, and felt I'd be done with that mentality.
Overall, I'm still happy here, I'll find my niche soon enough; but, where does a deaf, Native American, Muslim fit? Just kidding, I communicate in 7 different languages when speaking; answer, not in America. I'll try to get accustomed, and enjoy the positives offered in this city.

In the Northeast, there are still ethnic neighborhoods in many cities. So, a lot of the segregation isn't necessarily racial or just racial, but ethnic to some degree as well. It has broken down quite a bit, but you still can notice it.
Depends on what neighborhood you live in too, some are better than others. I know the city a whole lot better than the suburbs.
I knew a number of Whites who lived in the 19th Ward and many of their suburban co-workers were mortified that they would live among "those people" as they so fondly call them.
Most of their White co-workers wouldnt even come to their cookouts when invited. Ignorance and fear are terrible things.
East High used to be a place where Black and White students from the city would mix pretty well. I have a number of friends who attended.
I'm within walking distance of there. I don't know about the high school, but the neighborhood is mixed. Beechwood on one side is almost all African American, Browncroft is almost all white on the other side. So I guess Culver-Winton, is the median between the two.

And thats the screwed up part. "Those people" are just as intelligent as you and me. Our neighbors have a couple kids, and they are probably the best behaved that I have seen in awhile. The mother says something, and those kids come running, no questions asked. Beats alot of the Paris Hilton want-to-be kids.

I'm surprised that East High isn't more mixed. I would think it would be considering where it is located. It probably was about 20 years ago, but not as much now. It's still about 12% White, but it seems low for that part of town. I believe SOTA, Charlotte and Jefferson still have a decent amount of White students. For the suburbs, Gates-Chili, Rush-Henrietta, Eastridge, Brighton and the Greece HS's are relatively mixed.
Here in Syracuse, even with a recent wave of "White Flight"(and flight of some others), the HS's have White percentages of 25%, 30%, 31% and 46%. So, all of them still have a good amount of White students.

Wow, I'm surprised that it is that low. That is a big high school, would have though it would serve most of the east side of the city. I wonder what the percentages are from neighborhood to neighborhood?
