Is there anything in Rochester or surrounding area that has good schools with low taxes? We are looking for a 4 bedroom house to buy.

No such thing as low taxes in NY. But there are lower-priced homes than in many other areas.

Try the Rochester suburb of Greece, off Long Pond Road and that area. The schools are excellent, crime is low, real estate costs are reasonable. (Taxes are relatively high.)

Why are the house taxes so high here? Where in Rochester will be low taxes, good schools and low crime rate?

Thank you. That is helpful.

What about Henrietta or parts of Chili?

I personally prefer Greece, although it doesn't have a quaint -- or any -- downtown. It has Ridge Road, which has a gigantic mall. It also borders the lake, and I liked driving along the lake on the way to Canada. It also has an incredible library and an incredible YMCA. It also has more wide-open spaces to the west. You might like Hilton, too, which is next door to Greece, and it used to be very rural. It has a little downtown; I haven't been there in many years.

When I think of Henrietta, I think of malls, traffic, RIT (university), MCC (two-year college), and garage doors that are left open all the time. I went to school there and worked there.

I'm not familiar with Chili, but it used to be more rural and open (maybe it still is, I just don't know), and it's a suburb, and as far as I know doesn't have a downtown. But it might fit what you need, just like Greece would.

If you like quaint towns, think of the ones that border the Barge Canal (before 1918, called the Erie Canal). Look at a map and then research them online, including real estate, and then visit them.

Maybe you would like Fairport, Pittsford, or Spencerport.

This is a photo gallery from the Town of Spencerport:

My mother was born in Spencerport, and my grandmother and great-grandmother are buried near there. I've only been to Spencerport a few times, but it always seemed to be sort of a quaint, unheralded place. I haven't been there in a while, so I don't know what it's like now. But I would move there.

NW Ontario County. Taxes are 35% to as much as 50%+ lower, there, than over the line into Perinton and Mendon.

It's a drive into the city (25-35 min. or so, depending). Quiet out there, with good schools, but close enough to major retail and other amenities.

Can't forget Brockport too.

My sister in law lives out there. Very quiet and rural. There are a couple shopping centers closer to Webster/Irondequoit but not a whole lot there. The city is a hike depending on where you live, keep in mind traffic in the morning. Definitely low crime. Overall I would recommend Ontario county if you like rural areas.

What about Victor/Farmington? Also, I thought Perinton was still in Monroe County. Same with Mendon.....
