Rochester - where to move, where to avoid, for family
Hey there,
We will probably be moving to Rochester in the next couple of months..
We would like to live not too far from the CBP (Customs & Border Patrol Station) in Irondequoit.
Would so appreciate some guidance as to which neighborhoods are good, which are really not, and any other thoughts you have on neighborhoods.
We have a one-year-old and one on the way. Would also very much appreciate any words on neighborhoods with playgrounds, parks, and ones near supermarkets, (or walmart) or the mall, etc.
Thanks for the help.

Anything around the bay, or close to the lake is going to be a good area. There is a good shopping area around Empire blvd with a Walmart in the plaza, there is plenty of shopping on rt104 with a mall they will be refurbishing.
If you are looking closer to the city, or in the city, look east of Culver rd. Browncroft and Culver-Winton are good city neighborhoods and the taxes should be lower than Irondequoit. You will probably have to use city schools though, which are probably the only bad thing about living in those neighborhoods.

that is very helpful.. thanks.. I was thinking of homeschooling the kids, also. Ideally we would like to live as close to the CBP station in Irondequoit as possible. We like "suburbia" as opposed to being right in the middle of the city, but we want to be close enough to the city, if possible.. (like around 20 min away at the most..)
thanks for your input!!

Just curious, are you a new hire or a transfer?
That's a desirable location for a few guys in CBP I know but they are newer so they have to wait a while.

If you are purchasing a home, I would suggest Webster, the property taxes are MUCH less. There are generally some smaller places available in the Sommerville area of Irondequoit that sell for well under 100k and are close to Pattonwood Drive, where you want to be. For the most part, any area, even Webster is only a few minutes from there.
The mall in Irondequoit is a dead as can be, Webster has fantastic shopping areas, but as I mentioned, you can drive to any number of shopping facilities in a few minutes since the two bridges over the bay are there.
I commend you for the home schooling idea, God bless you and your family. Please feel free to e-mail me with questions.

How close is the mall in Greece from that part of Irondequoit? I wouldn't think that it would be far at all, if you just go west on Route 104. The Mall at Greece Ridge · Welcome ·.·.· a WILMORITE property

There is so much shopping around this area, we are spoiled Hardly anything much more than 15 minutes with the expressways. Can even go across Stutson St Bridge to Parkway to 590 and over to mall.

Try North Greece as well, like anywhere north of Maiden Lane. Taxes are kinda high, but the town offers a decent amount for the money, and the roads and sidewalks are usually well taken care of in the winter time
