Winter Coats
Hi, I am currently a male student at RIT and I come from Hawaii. I have absolutely no experience with weather that goes below 60 degrees, so my question is, What kind of winter coat would you suggest? I would prefer to be able to buy it online since it is much more convenient for me since I am taking classes. I have been fine with the weather so far, although its only gotten as low as 40 degrees here with some rain and high wind. I havent actually used any extra clothing so I would say I have a decent tolerance for cold weather. Thanks for all the help!

For durability and price, I would suggest a Carhart type jacket with a hood. Outer layer is cotton duct and inner is generally synthetic. They fit loosely so allow for a heavy sweater underneath and are fairly waterproof. If I had one winter jacket, that would be the one.

Agree.
A good coat is nice to have, but it's less important in my opinion than warm gloves, a warm hat and decent shoes. If you have those other things, you may find you don't need that heavy of a coat.

Sorry for the late reply but thanks for all the help. I actually already ordered some stuff from LLBean. This is the jacket:
Storm Chaser 3-in-1 Jacket: Rain and Wind at L.L.Bean
and these are the shoes:
Wildcat II Lace-Up Boots: Snow at L.L.Bean
I've actually been walking around without any extra clothes when its gotten below 30 degrees here, so Im thinking that maybe just that and a sweatshirt I have will hold me through. I don't have very much money to spend .

I have heard good things about Carhart. They are a little too rugged for me, but they are very warm and durable. Maybe they have something more stylish?
If you don't think you will get wet much, a nice leather jacket is always nice to go out in. I would also recommend a good pair of gloves and a hat. I have a fake suede jacket, nobody can tell. ;-)
In the fall I usually wear a fleece or just long sleeves. Even now the temp is ok for me. But coming from HI, this may take some time to get used to.
