Hello! I'm on Long Island and considering moving upstate NY, possibly Rochester.

I am looking for an area with nice schools, preferably a private school. A safe area with families.

What kind of jobs are up there? What are the best hospitals?

Thanks

If you want good public schools, places like Pittsford, Brighton, Webster, Fairport and Penfield are known to be the best. All of them are safe and the other suburbs are good too.

Strong is probably the best hospital and here is a good website to look at jobs: Central New York Jobs

Is there anything else you are looking for in terms of the area?

Also, in terms of private schools, you might like the Harley School or Allendale-Columbia. There are quite a few Catholic and Christian school options as well. Actually, my nieces go to Northstar Christian and seem to like the school.

W. Irondequoit is another great district. Nice part of town, too.

Lots of private schools around Rochester, although not nearly as many as I remember growing up.

Northstar Christian Academy is a good one:

Harley and Allendale-Columbia are excellent. There might be one or two Jewish schools, as well.

The Catholic schools are pretty consistent across the county. I think St. Mary's in Canandaigua (Ontario Cty.) is still going strong. Same for Mother of Sorrows in Greece.

Bishop Kearney is a middle/high school in Irondequoit. McQuaid Jesuit is all boys. Aquinas HS is on the west side of the city.

Long Island's schools are better than any schools you will find upstate.

Actually, Pittsford and Brighton rank in the top 10 in the state. Therefore, far ahead of most schools on LI. And you can buy a house in both of those towns for under $300k that will have indoor plumbing and a yard!

According to what? Pittsford and Brighton are always ranked nationally and there are others of high quality in the Rochester area as well.

I forgot about West Irondequoit, which also another very good school district to look at.

Exactly and I wish I saw this before reading that post.

You can go to any metro in Upstate and find school districts of a very high quality.

Can't forget Mercy, which is all-girls high school: Our Lady of Mercy Highschool

Found a good recent NY Times article which lists all of the districts in the state, how they rank, and it breaks it down for some schools (not all):

West Irondequoit School District - New York State Test Scores - The New York Times
