Default Maybe moving to Rochester

I have an interview in Rochester and we may be moving there from Raleigh, NC in the near future. Can anyone tell me what suburbs have good school systems and what the median house price is? Thanks.

Pittsford and Brighton both have great schools, however they are the most expensive suburbs in the Rochester area. If the price tag of the house won't give you a mild heart attack, the property taxes definitely will. Webster is another fast growing suburb with good schools and very family friendly. The house prices are not bad (~200-300K for a nice 3/4 bedroom house), but again, the property taxes are really high. I guess that is the trend here in Rochester....very high property taxes!!
The economy in this city is kind of dwindling, so unless you are interviewing for a position in the medical or computer tech sector, you might be out of luck.
Be ready for 9 months of gray skies and snow, and only 3 months to enjoy the sun.

9 months is an extreme exaggeration on winter. It's true that it is largly gray skies from late November thru late March....but beginning in April, then May thru September it is generally warm with a decent amount of sunshine. October is cool, but still relatively sunny and with brilliant fall foliage. Greece was a great place to live 30 years ago when I was a kid growing up there...and it is a great place to live now and where I am likely moving back too (also from the Raleigh, NC area).

Only part of this is correct. Pittsford is the most expensive area in Monroe county, and prop. taxes are high. But, it is almost always wonderful weather wise from april 15 until october 31. Thats about 6 and a half months of great weather!

I am entertaining a job offer in Rochester. I have read many of the notes related to snowfall and winter and have similar concerns as others in regards to the magnitude of the snowfall. I have lived in Cleveland and experienced lake effect snow. In Cleveland if you live West or South of the city you could avoid most of the lake effect snow. Is there a typical pattern of snowfall that is geographically better or worse in Rochester?

In terms of gray and wet, Columbus Ohio and Cleveland both have rather dreary winters starting in November and ending in Mid April. Not terribly cold but gray and wet and bad for shoes and keeping your car clean. Spring and Summer are very nice with hot and humid really hitting in July and August. Fall, generally ending in Mid October is beautiful. Can anyone compare/contrast this to Rochester.

Sounds close! Rochester weather really isn't all that bad most of the time... it's those periods of extended cloudiness in mid-winter that can bum you out. Sometimes we have winter with lake effect snow every day for a month. Some winters are easy, like last the last two years. It's a cycle and the wheel goes round and round. Winters get to be a drag when March comes around and the roads & parking lots are slushy 1/2 the time. Not everyone will shovel the sidewalks (expecting the local gvt to do it for them), so walking can be a challenge. But then many of the suburbs don't have sidewalks.

You can probably find avg snowfall values to compare with Cleveland as a reference.

Summer, Spring & Fall are quite nice. We do get our hot & humid in July & August, with temps reaching low 90's, but it doesn't last for weeks! The growing season for a veggie garden starts after Mem.Day, and lasts into Sept. Frosts will occur in late Spring & early Fall.

Closer to Lake Ontario will get you more snowfall in the winter, & be a little cooler in the summer. The great equalizer!

What is nice about the weather here can most likely be said of most places- Don't like it ... wait an hour!
