Well, it exists...Kind of...
I was there a few months ago. It's called Leakey, TX.
Check it out when you get a chance.

The actual city police department was rarely mentioned in the episodes, but if I remember right there was a chief of police, 4 patrol officers, 2 detectives and one crime lab technician.
The Police were in Reilly, NC.

I live part-time in rural NSW and there's a town called Bellbrook. One part-time cop, gossipy general store owner, an old bar (which the barkeep sits outside of most of the day) and a little lane I could see from my study. It's the sort of lane you expect to see a kid strolling along with his fishing rod.
And it's pretty too. I'm looking for a U.S Mayberry now.

As far as the show was concerned, Andy and Barney patrolled the town of Mayberry and the out lying areas of the county. Goober, Floyd and Gomer (before his own show) were their incapable extra deputies used for special occasions. Barn and Andy handled all calls within the small town of about 1,200 people, there was no other law enforcement agency in town. You might recall them arresting Otis (the town drunk), investigating a theft at Weaver's department store, or Barney going undercover at the bank, all things a city PD would do if there had been one. The Raleigh Police Department, where Barney eventually went to work, did have a Chief, patrol officers, and detectives. It was a great show.
