Yes , I devoted many years as an Automotive journalist/historian.. Wrote several books , and authored monthly columns in Journals and national magazines. It was a fun ride....in the fast lane.

Heya. Sorry I've been absent - various things have come up (girlfriend among them: "I'm stuck on I-5 and my tire is flat and it's raining and windy and cold come fix my carrrrrrrrr!")

She's a nurse's assistant, to answer the question, and makes pretty good money (more than me, though that's not saying much), but her family has a good bit of cash as well.

My degree was in English/Creative Writing, to answer that question. I hope to make a living as a writer someday, but I'm not quite dumb enough to think I'll be able to get rich (or even get published) and be on easy street the rest of my life. Hence, the Army.

I'd like to thank everyone who chimed in. Like I said, this was mostly just curiosity on my part - and I'm glad I got some good ideas. It looks like Vermont/Maine would be the closest to what she's looking for, followed by Minnesota/Wisconsin. It's amazing what you can see with Google Street View.

So I've got something to talk about next time she ambushes me. I think I'm also going to look at somewhere in Northern Washington, in Whatcom or Skagit counties. It won't meet all of her critieria, but being closer to our families might just make up for it.

Anyway, thanks again guys

You'll find more of that snow at lower elevations in north Central (Winthrop, etc.) and North Eastern Washington (Republic, Sherman Pass area) than in NW Washington.

If I were a young person , I would consider moving to Vancouver , BC . Has been voted one of the top 4 places to live in the world. Canada is looking for young people , in education, the arts, writers , and engineers..... Don't count out the possibilities of emigrating North for a bright future , and more ideal weather...along the pacific Rim.

Just a couple more suggestions/ideas. Duluth has four hospitals and a couple colleges. There are several outlets for writing as well. Nothing to get rich off, but a good community of writers throughout the region. Marquette has a 2-year and 4-year nursing program, so those types of jobs at the hospital there are hard to come by because they already have a good pool of potential workers.

My other suggestion is to enjoy these talks. My husband and I move a lot for his job and it is always enjoy looking at new places to move to. Have fun thinking of different areas and looking up towns and real estate.
