I grew up in a very rural fishing villiage area on the Lower Eastern Shore of Maryland...well at least lived there for ten years or so...to my question...

does anyone know of some very rural areas that are right on the ocean...i like how a lot of the outer banks are...the eastern shore of maryland, va, del. has some rural areas...Are there any other extermely rural fishing villiage type areas that are on the ocean that anyone can think of?

There's some areas in Maine like that, well away from Portland though...

There are quite a number on the Northern Cal, Oregon and Washington coast. Some of those towns, especially in WA, are very, very rural--isolated.

Not sure if it would be referred to as "rural"...but the town of Seaside, Florida is a small town, and I would imagine it's on the ocean. Or at least the Gulf.

Seaside's essentially a movie set surrounded by (admittedly very nice) suburban-style subdivisions.

To me, "rural" means "farming area", which rules out pretty much anything that is next to an ocean. I don't agree with the notion that any place that is far from a large city is rural. There needs to be an agricultural aspect to the place, too.

I disagree. Rural to me includes forests, lakes, and even oceanfront areas, that are not heavily populated.

The area that CelticViking was referring to (lower Eastern Shore) is generally agricultural in nature. It's dominated by chicken farms.

Also I think rural could include, say, a small fishing village.
