Is it any place that has atleast 1 McDonalds qualifies as a big city to you ? lol.
Please. I grew up on a farm outside a village of 350 people. Lived there until I was 18. Then I moved to a rural college town of about 10,000 people (including the population of the college).
I lived in Chicago as a young adult, post-college (metro of nearly 10 million). I now live in Kansas City (metro of 2 million). When I was a college student, I lived and studied in Dublin, Ireland (metro of 1 million), Cape Town, South Africa (3.5 million), and Johannesburg, South Africa (metro of 6 million).
Don't assume that because somebody's from small towns or rural areas, they have no concept of anything other than that, or that they'd be blow away by a town with a McDonald's. That's just stupid and makes you look like an idiot.
I have lived in a city that is over 2000 years old and has over 4 million people. And I have lived in many other places with smaller populations. Different sized communities all have different feels to them.
To me 'rural' seems obvious, as very few people. Regions with less than 5 people per square mile to maybe as high as 20 people per square mile, can be seen as rural. Homes spread out a mile apart [or more], feels relatively rural.
Rural / small towns - what communities form in rural areas? Generally I think when a community gets above 10,000 it's sprawl will likewise change the surrounding areas to having more people, and less rural.
When you can freely step out on your porch, in your birthday suit and fire a rifle at deer munching on your garden veggies; it rather implies that you have no nearby neighbors.
When homes pack in tight, you lose these freedoms.

big city = one or more stop lights. My criteria is no stop lights in the entire county.
