The 1950s set depicts a common town layout. I've seen many that are similar. One near us:
athens al courthouse - Google Search

There even is an aborted development south of town that looks similar to the scene where Marty hides the car behind a billboard.

A few years ago we traveled southeast to the Carolina's. The town of Black Mountain comes to mind, was just east of Asheville NC. We have lots of great small towns up here in the northeast but BM may fit the description

Petaluma, CA was the town in Sonoma County, CA that the film directors wanted to use for the movie, but the cost of filming on a studio lot was a lot lower than in a busy suburb of the San Francisco bay area. Some off-set locations were used in nearby Pasadena and Burbank.

I always figured the town name "Hill Valley" was sort of copying the actual town of Mill Valley, CA which is a quaint, wealthy Marin County suburb of 12,000 residents just 10 miles north of the Golden Gate Bridge. The town of Mill Valley is surrounded by the steep hills of Mt. Tamalpais and the clock tower of Tamalpais High School greets everyone upon entering the town on the corner of Miller Avenue and Camino Alto.
