Anyone from the city moved to a RURAL small town and loved it?

lived in a suburb of st. Louis for 61 years, purchase 60 acres, 200 miles in south central missouri and a house 20 miles from two small towns one in either direction one 10,000 people the other 2000. Walmart is king, I order most everything from amazon, libraries cost money to join since I'm outside city limits. I'm a outsider only a handful of people will talk to me, but the peace and quiet are nice and rush hour traffic is at it's peak when 4 cars are at the one stop light in town. purchase appliances from a box store from other than a town next to you,good luck getting it serviced. towns have doctors by if you need other than a nurse practitioners, you might wait two months for a appointment. other than taxes every thing cost more- home owners insurance- fire protection is very high, hardware and grocery stores don't have the selection.so iv kept my doctors, dentist in st. Louis and drive 200 miles one way except when a nurse practitioner will work.movie theatres play pg movies unless you want to drive 110 miles- then I make the day out of it.
The wife and I lived in Northern VA from 73 and 74 respectively. Married in 83. If you know this area NOVA is not really a city but it's a mess with heavy population and traffic. We finally had enough and moved last year to the Shenandoah Valley in VA in between two mountain ranges. We have views from both front and back. We're surrounded by farm land and can almost always see cattle. We're bought 5 acres. We're only minutes (8-12) from two towns. One has a population of around 300 and the other maybe 2000. We have everything we need here and can be in bigger towns within 30-40 minutes when we need. I wouldn't give this up and move back to NOVA for anything.
I grew up in one of the top 5 largest cities. Ran up and down the east coast whenever I wanted.
Left it all for very remote living when I was in my twenties and love it. I can move pretty comfortably in cities when necessary, but always miss my peaceful life. I've lived in a few places in the northern Rockies. My two favorite places? I was 65 miles from town both times. Once on the prairie and once on the face of a mountain. Love being able to see many miles. I also like the work that is required to successfully live in remote places.
I want to hear from people who grew up in areas that are close proximity to action and population, but left it all for rural, quiet, in the sticks, away from malls or beaches or casinos or corporate areas.
Did you do it and was it like you expected?
Did you make a mistake and go back where you came from?
Did you love it and never look back?
Did you love it, miss your old home, but got along fine in the new rural home?
I grew up in the pinelands of NJ, but I was still an hour from philly, beaches, etc so I don't think it counts. I'm moving to the hills of Appalachia and I've zeroed in on region I want, but even within this region there are towns or populated areas that are more rural and secluded than others, I'm trying to zero in even further.
I'm use to driving 2 miles to a 24/hr store and getting a sandwich or driving 3 miles to the delaware river to walk, or biking on sidewalks, chosing one of 5 libraries within the 5 mile radius of where I live and want to read a book, etc..... What are your experiences and please share any ideas or food for thought.
I lived the first 30 years of my life in big cities. Phoenix, New Orleans, Corpus Christi, etc., After a divorce, I decided to move to rural Missouri where my parents were.
My opinion is that every place has its up side and down side. Now days, the crime and violence in big cities is pretty hard to deal with and I am grateful that I don't have to deal with that.
Prices being what they are also, it is mighty expensive to live in a big city these days, and also, being able to afford "entertainment" is next to impossible with the cost of movies pushing $10 per ticket.
That being said, I find rural life pretty boring. I'd love to be able to see some incredibly beautiful art again, science museums, opera, symphony, live plays (not community plays), ice skating, things like that.
Driving 17 mile to WalMart is not really my idea of fun and well, good restaurants are even farther. But on the other hand, I enjoy the freedom of burning my trash, shooting my guns, sun bathing naked on my back deck, and the howl of the coyotes in the distance on a summer's evening. You can also have all the meth heads that break into storage units (mine!) to steal something. Lord help them if they ever try this at my house. I'm a strong proponent of the 2nd amendment and the new and improved Missouri Castle Doctrine. pew pew pew pew
