Although I grew up on a small farm, I left as a teenager. Seeking a salary, I worked in the French Quarter of New Orleans, inside the Beltway of D.C. and in the downtown areas of a couple of smaller cities in Texas and New Mexico. Three years ago I bought a small farm near a town of about 1200 people in the same state where I started out.
Cities offer a place for those who are more comfortable with mediocrity and security than they are with individualism and freedom. I won't be going back.
I left So. Cal 15 years ago and lived in a small town in WY for 2 years. Loved it and then followed grandchildren to Nebraska and now live just outside a town of about 100 people. I love it here and can't see myself ever moving back to a heavily populated area again. I don't even want to live in the county seat town, pop. 7000. I still tell people I "escaped" from CA and burned that bridge behind me.
Small town for us is 65 miles to get supplies. Post office and Vol. FD., thats it here.
Many regrets as the area sort of dried up. + Very quiet, open country, satelite TV and internet. No cell. Phone service and elec.
Ok for now; but looking to move out.

I myself have not but my parents and very good friends have made the transition from big city living to small town (not suburbs). It is quite the adjustment, but they all have a more relaxed, calm attitude towards life and everyday living. Everything is less rushed and casual (especially on the west coast). Are you thinking of making a move?
Moved back to my hometown in 2010. Having a few negative experiences I find it hard to shake. The jury is still out on this question. In many ways, I do love the peacefulness, the natural surroundings, but the 'GROUP-THINK" is about to drive me crazy.

I think moving back to your hometown can be harder than moving somewhere that you don't know anybody. We lived in several small towns before landing in my wife's hometown. After almost 4 years she's still having a hard time feeling accepted into any of the cliques that have formed between her schoolmates that have lived in the area all along.
My husband and I lived in downtown Boston and several other cities before chucking it all and moving to the wilds and mountains of northern Idaho and built a small cabin on a river.
We've been here ten years and loved pretty much every minute of it.
We're getting ready to move back to my hometown, which is only 50 miles from where we live now. My mother passed away last month and my90 yr old dad decided to move to an assisted living facility in town. He is giving my wife and I their house, payment free. I haven't lived here since '78 but have always wanted to come back. You can still walk down the street and have people wave at you as they drive by or are sitting on the porch. Not worried too much about fitting in any crowd. We have made it fine the 12 years we've been together with just the 2 of us. Looking forward to church there though. Great church family. Not sure what week we'll be moving but already have more help that we'll need and I know that, once we get settled, we'll have enough food brought over we won't have to cook dinner for a while. lol
Forgot to mention we're upgrading! Moving from a town of 8,000 to a town of 12,000!
