I have been tossing this idea around, for a long time now, and after visiting the visitor center last week, I have decided to start saving up to build an Earthship. Has anyone ever heard of this before? I am curious to know the reactions that residents would have. For those of you who arent quite sure what an Earthship is, here is thier website: Radically Sustainable Green Buildings - Interior Earthship Images

I've heard of earthships and love the flexibility and individualization of design. You would need revision of building codes to erect an earthship in most municipalities. You'll have time to save while finding out how to make the home you want to build fit within the parameters of the local planning commission (if there is one).

Make sure to use buzz words that convey what you want in acceptable terms. Bermed homes are often acceptable building styles and passive solar design has become important again. However, rammed tire walls can be a sticking point. Using post consumer styrofoam to create earth bags sounds like an option I might want to consider for the insulation properties it would offer.

Best of luck.

Hippyman, I may be bringing coals to Newcastle, but ...

I have been following this earthship build for quite a while. Dan Richfield's Earthship Build If it is new to you, there may be information that will be helpful.
