OK, our farm is TWO AND A HALF MILES AWAY from town. We're about five miles from a Walmart. But, we just combined our beans and now what do I see rolling around the fields? Plastic Walmart bags! You know they're in the corn, too. And they're out there floating around all the time, it's just that they're more visible when the fields are cleared. AAAAARRRGGG! Stop using plastic bags, people! Unless you just love the fact that plastic ends up gumming up our equipment and floats around with and in the food you eventually eat. I should say that it's not just Walmart, it's the town's grocery store bags too. If you just have to use plastic bags at least throw them away or recycle them in a way that they won't get out and float around the universe. It's so depressing to look out over our beautiful fields on a bright blue sunshiney day with hawks and geese in the sky - and see dirty little blue bags floating around the ground or stuck in the sloughs. Yuuuck!
We live on the outskirts of town and we have the same thing but I have seen more than a few go flying out of the trash truck as it is going down the road from making it's weekly trash pick up. We have reusable bags for groceries and other items and the rare times we actually get a plastic bag they are used for the trash cans in the bathroom and my office and the rest are saved and recycled.

Yeah.... Well, if the govt banned them bags the first thing you would hear out of someone's mouth would be "how dare they tell me what I can use?!??! Big government!!!"... Then the next thing would be "just because someone is irresponsible with their bags doesn't mean we all are..."... yadda yadda yadda....
There's needs to be a town weirdo, who is always walking the streets looking for Wal-Mart bags to HORDE!
Dude must be a townie because I don't see any bags floating around my yard or anywhere around.
I'm part of a group doing the Adopt a Highway. We clean a two mile stretch twice a year. I'm amazed at what accumulates along the road-side in an area pretty much considered pollution free. Must be the same people setting their Wal-Mart bags free...
I hate those bags from Chinamart or other retailers. I regularly patrol my property and the roadside near us for those dang things (and other trash) and it really grinds my gears when one gets caught high up in a tree. It might be a year or more before it comes down. And it's always those handled bags that seem to blow around and get caught on everything. Grrrr!
In some communities the bags are banned or there is a charge at check out for them. Regardless of what one thinks of the "left" coast, the movement is in full swing there and I would support a ban in my community but I'd bet that the farm belt state where we are moving will be one of the last to consider such legislation. So Like the OP we will be picking bags out of the hedgerows, creeks and fence lines for years to come....
You know the other thing I see floating around now and then? (Just took the dog for a walk around the perimeter of the corn fields) Those white dryer fabric softener sheet things (maybe they're made of polyester???) Where on earth are they coming from??? I don't use them. The area landfill is pretty far south - maybe 7 miles? We do have neighbor's houses on both sides about a half mile away, and the wind has been pretty bad lately, so maybe these dryer sheet things escaped from their trash? But why just these things?
Is there anywhere left in America where modern trash isn't stuck in the trees - stuck in the sloughs or in the fields - or floating in the air??? I once worked for a small town library where the power went out due to our electric line being struck by a floating mylar birthday balloon!
Anyway, those of you who live far in the boonies - give me some trash-free hope!

I have one possibility for the dryer sheets. Some people stuff them in nooks and crannies of their boats to keep the spiders away.. I think I heard that somewhere. Possible someone else thinks this is true and is doing something similar where wind can at get them??
