The best small town movie I can think of, if you like older films, starred
David Wayne and Jean Peters. 1952's "Wait 'til the Sun Shines, Nellie"
rates as an underappreciated gem among many critics. It starts out
in the 1800s when a young barber settles down at a crossroads, which
eventually builds into a small Illinois town. The plot is a mix of drama, romance,
and presentations of how the town grew over the course of 50 years, which
by the time the barber reaches old age it's past WWI, and the changes are
dramatic. It's a color film, not colorized.
You Can Count on Me It's not terribly famous, despite having quite a few famous people in it (Laura Linney, Matthew Broderick, Mark Ruffalo, one of the Culkin kids) but it's such a good movie. I hope somebody out there who had never heard of it goes out and watches it because of me.
