When visiting Bambridge in Ireland we decided to do the Bronte trail but someone had stole all the signs in the countryside and we drove round for hours searching for the places the Brontes went to school and lived...eventually finding them..
About 25 years ago, Smith County, Tennessee finally stopped replacing the following at a cross street:
< DEFEATED DIFFICULT >
I wish I had got one.
LOL, are you from Difficult, Dave?
I use to work with a girl who lived in Defeated for awhile.
As to the stealing of street signs, IDK. We had ours stolen three times in a one yr. period. Dead end street with 7 homes, Im sure it wasn't anyone who lives on our road.
Yes it's a problem, mostly for the more unusual/interesting road names. "Ghost Hollow Road," "Gay Street," and "Satan's Kingdom" are popular targets of thieves in this county. Yes we have a village called "Satan's Kingdom" a couple towns from me. I'm not even sure they bother replacing that one anymore.
A new sign was put up shortly before I originally posted this question (it prompted my thoughts on this). It was the week before Christmas I believe. The sign is now gone; it lasted all of two weeks.
As I said before the road name isn't at all funny; Union Ridge rd. is all it said. I suspect some hillbilly thinks that taking down the road sign will keep strangers away or some silly idea like that.
There is a church on my road and after their long time preacher Rev. King died they purchased a road sign and put it up in front of the church. They unofficially renamed the road "King Union Ridge rd" which has caused some issues for me with delivery trucks and a mail verification service. It even shows up on my credit report as a place I have lived. Do you think they would steal that sign? It has been there since I moved in and has never gone missing.

There's a corner in CA, where the streets are called, "Thisaway" & "Thataway," those probably get stolen a lot. My town has an "Easy" Street and a "Friendly" Place. But nobody has stolen them that I noticed. The one's that don't last long are the "No Shooting" signs by the shooting area. Apparently they are magnetic and attract bullets.
Eastern Arizona used to have a US highway 666, a north-south spur of Route 66. Those signs were VERY in demand, most likely from devil worshippers. The highway dept finally gave up and re-named the road US 191.
