It appears farming in Maine is very dependent on the size of the retirement check from a non-farming career.

In Maine, nearly 2/3 of all "farms" have sales less than $9,999 .

Maine is also colder so being Norwegian, I would love it

My family would not move to Maine, already well established here regarding jobs and such

I believe you said you have family here in California farming in the bad air. Somewhere in Southern Ca or the San Joaquin valley if memory serves me correctly

Glad you are enjoying your life, it sounds beautiful

I recently read that one town near us has a per-capita income of $8,000. The Cost-Of-Living is pretty low in some areas.

Our farm income is less than $10k. We are in two markets with honey, maple, fiddleheads, pork sausage and herbs.

My parents had an almond orchard and sharecropped almonds near Modesto.

I have siblings are in walnuts and grapes near Turlock.

I milked goats up in Upper Lake California for a few years. I attended college in Fresno. While attending college I working at the Forestiere Underground Gardens in Fresno.

I had a Tri-plex rental complex in Atwater for a few years.

Most of my experience in California has been in the San Joaquin Valley.

Hello everyone, great advice on this topic. I'd forgotten about this forum. I've made every mistake that has been mentioned, plus a few extras.

When we first moved to the area, I was told there was a lot of demonic activity here and it's true. It's very evident.

I had planned to move back to the high desert in California but the seismic activity is the reason we left in 1992, and it's now increasing. While this area in Texas is free of quakes, small town living is not for me. I'm divorced now.

There are not quite 8,000 people here. My time here has given me an appreciation of city living that I never had before. I like looking at the pretty calendar photos of rural areas, watching the programs and movies set in the country and reading the stories. But living here? It's a death trap. Literally and figuratively.

Studies show that elderly people who live in a city live longer, are happier and healthier than those living in a rural area. So true!

The best way to choose a small town is to imagine living there without a car because at some point, you may have to.

Park your car, ride the bus. See where it goes and how often. Is there service on weekends? Minor holidays?

Check the medical facilities. There isn't a full service hospital here, just an ER, and it's not in network for Aetna even though every other location is. They will stabilize you, but you'll need a way to get to the city which is 35 miles away. The cost to be transported by ambulance or helicopter is high. An elderly couple I know had a wonderful home out in the country here, outside the city limits. One day her husband collapsed. She's petite, she couldn't move him, so she ran to get the neighbor but they still couldn't move him. She'd called 911 but due to traffic it took them 30 minutesto reach them and by then he was dead.

The local fire department is staffed by volunteers who are scattered throughout the county. It's going to be awhile before they reach you.

Resources are slim to none here. Another elderly couple I know is facing having to go to the nursing home because her husband recently fell and has lost the use of his legs. He is permanently disabled now and in a wheelchair. Their mobile home is elevated with multiple steps leading to the front door. Their elderly relatives live nearby but can't help much. So, the man needs to go to the doctor, but there's no one available on this particular day to help her get him from the house to the car. She called an ambulance and the police but they would not assist. She called the fire department and they came and carried him to the car. You'd think the church she has been so deeply involved with for over 25 years would step in and help but they won't. She won't say what happened. All she says is that she goes late and leaves early.

Everything you need or want won't be readily available here. There's one grocery store and a Walmart. Thank God for Amazon. Lack of competition keeps prices high.

Local government is corrupt. Property taxes are high. Streets and sidewalks are in disrepair.

Each school, including elementary, has a full time armed cop with an office on campus.

What's good? Well, if you're related to someone here you've got it made. You can have your home repossessed and still get a loan at the bank for a new one. You can commit a crime and avoid prosecution and jail time because you have relatives who are lawyers and the judge is an old buddy. Except if you're black. Then you'll be falsely accused of killing someone and spend YEARS in prison on death row. This ain't Mayberry. By the way, I'm a 65 year old white woman.

They are not into preparedness here. Only after a preventable disaster occurs do they take action. By then, people's lives and homes have been destroyed. I live in an old apartment with an ongoing, slow water leak in the attic. The landlord has known about this for longer than I've lived here but refuses to fix the problem. Instead, they patch and paint over the evidence. I can't get renter's insurance because of that leak. There's no solution except to move.

Affordable veterinary care is not available here, only in the city. You can't get a rabies booster for your animal without paying for a full exam.

How many ways are there in and out of town? During Hurricane Katrina, the highway was a parking lot. Every back road led to the interstate, which was also gridlocked.

Still want to move to a rural area? Pick one where you have roots.

There's a coven in the next town. I've watched tarot cards being used during a meeting of volunteers at the local library. Books on witchcraft and other occult activities have been donated to the library and made available to children, along with adult only books (porn). Using the word God is frowned upon, as in Thank God for....

The volunteer coordinator told me she had a problem with the word God.

I once met a very nice white witch but I've also met several people who are not so nice. I spoke to one volunteer whose countenance visibly changed from benign to menacing when I pushed for the Christian books to be made available to library patrons and not trashed.

For all the churches here, there is little Christ like behavior. A local pastor killed his neighbor's cat and couldn't understand why people were outraged. The poor cat was tortured and suffered before dying. The little girl who owned the cat was devastated.

I've never lived in a place like this, where people who say they are Christians are so mean. It doesn't matter which denomination, either.

I was once invited to a home church, and since I knew nothing about it, I accepted. I was driven wayyy out in the country to a house set back from an unmarked road. There were 6 people in attendance. This was a weeknight, so it was an interview of sorts for me and supposedly a Bible study for them. It was ridiculous. I wasn't approved, so that was the end of it.

I'm so glad! They were a clueless group of people. I doubt the group grew very much, if at all. When I tried talking to the leader of the group later, he became hostile, so I'm going to stick with what I'm most comfortable with. Churches in well lit areas that have an open door policy and pastors who know what they're doing!

Sounds like you just got into the wrong area or are having very bad luck. Maybe try moving to a nearby town?
a town with a good church at least? I feel for you. Moving is expensive
