San Diego County has a lot of rural areas. Valley Center is north of Escondido & in the hills east of I-15. Its mostly avocado & citrus farms. Other from the farms, the major employer is the casino; however, many who live there have to drive to Escondido or Temecula for shopping since there are mostly mom and pop stores. Both Escondido & Temecula are a 30 minute drive from Valley Center.

There is also Ramona, east of Escondido on Hwy 78, but they do have a Kmart.

Between Ramona & Escondido is the City of San Diego neighborhood of San Pasqual Valley. Its the northernmost neighborhood of San Diego & its mostly rural. I was confused when I saw an SDPD vehicle along Hwy 78, but it is indeed part of the city of SD, just like Rancho Bernardo. Its mostly dairy & citrus farms. The San Diego Zoo Safari Park is also located there.

Back when we tried, that's what we did. I still wish we'd been able to do it, but the house in socal was not selling but then a lot of places weren't, and we couldn't have gotten a place in Shingletown anyway. Aside from seeing people, I have no interest in going back to socal. The next best was to look in other places where costs were much lower. I've lived here in Cushing OK for nine years and still love my house and the trees and quiet so I guess you could say it worked. We even have earthquakes now

Hi Brandon,

We live in Sacramento and the Sierra Nevada west of Tahoe is gorgeous and well priced (for CA). Take a peek at Auburn, Placerville, etc.

Also, my brother lives in the foothills of Yosemite but is close enough to Clovis (high end area of Fresno) to be near enough to everything. Land is affordable there. I would add a caution as wildfires are fairly common there.

I grew up in the San Diego area, and you can get into some beautiful land (but it's hot) further east in Escondido (the mountains there, etc.). Big Bear is beautiful. Mt. Shasta in the very northern tip of Cali is also beautiful. And of course, the Sequoias.

Have fun!

But... you're Roanoke bound? So, you're leaving CA for VA?

MR5150....

Your photos are very misleading. They only show Yosemite National Park, where people can't buy property. Those unfamiliar with the area won't know this.
Why not post photos of the actual town you live in?

We live in Sacramento and our favorite places are:
NOCAL
- The Sierras
- Sequoia National Park
- Northern California coastal area above San Francisco to Oregon and beyond...

MIDCA
- Yosemite is a HUGE one.
- Hwy 1 - all of it but especially between Monterey and Santa Barbara
- The hills beyond Santa Barbara and Solvang

SOCAL
- Joshua Tree
- Big Bear

Just don't go I-5 - BORING - just farmland - and when you get around Bakersfield, you'll know immediately that it's a dairy farm. Pewwww! :-)

Hope that helps!

Yup - unfortunately. Although we have to leave our native California, we must move to the east coast to be closer to elderly parents and also for my hubby's job moving to the east coast. I'll miss my Cali.

Up on the ridge...Cities of Paradise, Magalia. NORTH cali is beautiful and rent is cheaper up here. No ocean, but lots of lakes and huge Ponderosa Pines.
