150 yards from back door to a 40 foot wide feeder stream that flows out of the mountains in to the B. R. River.
650 feet gravel driveway to gate, then East 1790 feet of old forest logging lane to junction with 1.2 miles of single lane county gravel road to my mail box.
........if I go West out of my gate I can follow an old horse/game trail for 3000 feet up into the B.R. Mountains.....
Leaving my Mail Box I go north 1/2 mile on 2-lane gravel road to junction with 2 lane 1/2 mile to State Highway.
4.4 miles north to gas station, post office and two restaurants in an unincorporated community of approx 800. (I don't go this direction except to go 48 miles north every month or so to a university town of about 60,000.)
I go frequently 15 miles south at the State Hwy to a town of approx 4800 pop for Hospital, doctors, dentists, opthamologists, several grocery stores, gas stations, veterinarians, restaurants, gun club & gun stores, etc,etc..
After almost 40 yrs, I wouldn't live anywhere else!

Doesn't everyone live in a township? I mean, I get that some states have corporate townships that handle local governance, but don't all states employ geographical townships?

All states divide the entire state into counties.

In some states a 'town' may form somewhere within a county, as towns grow they may annex other towns swallowing them and absorbing their areas. This leaves a lot of area in each county that remains NOT in any town.

In Maine, the entire state was drawn into a gridwork of townships. So every square-foot of space is inside a designated township.

No, .....if I understand correctly, only 20 states "have Townships".

Those are states with civil townships, which I incorrectly referred to as corporate townships earlier.

I'm talking about geographical townships, or survey townships. Geographical areas within a county made up of 36 sections of land. In my state each township has trustees with the authority to levy taxes to pay for cemetery upkeep, rural fire departments, etc., but they don't have any legislative authority. Governance for people in rural areas falls to the county. Our townships also have names.

I know not all townships are like this, but I have always assumed that every state used survey townships for geographical reasons.
