We live on 2 acres and secluded. Its a dead end. Neighbors on the side has at least 2 acres each so they are far enough. In the back there's woods and I can't see houses. Pretty quiet. So its not only how many acres do you own but how many acres the neighbors has.. I recommend google earth.
The curse of living in CT just about anywhere (except a mountain top if you can find one) is that no matter how much acreage (okay, with 1,000 acres maybe not) you are subject to the incessant whine of two cycle engines as your neighbors keep their property just so. Well, to be accurate your neighbors' landscaping crews. At least that is the curse in SW CT. Thus, complete peace and quiet is a tall order...
That said, 2-4 is generally plenty. Indeed, when you have more land than you can easily see another set of problems occurs: like what is someone doing on your land that you're not aware of...

Isn't this a problem in any suburban neighborhood, anywhere in the country? Jay

In my experience, having a bigger lot seems to help with noise from mowers, leaf blowers, etc. Granted it's only a few data points for the handful of houses I've owned. With a big lot there are fewer neighbors close enough that the noise is objectionable. And it seems people with big yards are more likely to hire their yardwork down, and those crews knock it out quicker than a DIY homeowner.

We live in 1.2 acre lot and our house is very private and quiet with trees on 3 sides of house. Only one side neighbor can be seen.
I would say a minimum of an acre to feel that people are not on top of you. Three or more acres to begin to feel secluded. Jay
We are thinking about moving out of Brisbane and into more of the Sunshine Coast, Australia
