A few years ago, a NJ mobster shell company [Casella] came up here, they wanted to build a Municipal Waste incinerator and landfill on a parcel adjacent to my farm. My property has the only legal easement to access that parcel.

Quebec and Mass both export huge quantity of waste and the shell company makes money from hauling it to other states for landfills to pollute various rivers. The site of this proposed landfill is a peat bog that drains into our river.

We had a bunch of town meetings, and public hearings with various state agencies. A couple of my neighbors testified that they had migrated here to live out their old age and to die here. They have lots of ammo on hand, and it would not upset them in the least to expend all their ammo targeting NJ mobsters as they die.

I went on radio and TV begging people to stay calm and be careful that no bystanders by harmed, only target the NJ folks intent to kill us and poison our water.

Eventually the state agency refused to give them a permit. But only after the local Native Tribe leaders committed their tribe to join the fight.
When I lived in MA, the concrete and waste disposal industries had a really bad rep, no doubt fueled by scum like Whitey Bulger’s Irish version of the Mafia and, of course, the Mafia itself.

Great that you got the state to see the light!

I heard that when Hell’s Angels planned to visit Forks, WA, quite a barricade of logging trucks guarded by armed loggers convinced them they were not welcome there.

My town has no gas station. The only retail store we had was a gunsmith. I think it would be obvious that we are armed.

Anybody coming in here with the intent to poison our land and water would meet resistance.

Or you can find responsible farm sitters for free.

Rural raised people who 'house-sit'.
We do it World wide. (Because we can). Our home place and our 2nd and 3rd rural homes have retiree tenants who appreciate country life and the opportunity to care for the livestock and grounds. Each has a spare home for us, or friends or caretakers. (As do many international farms).

Our WA based travel club has postings for house sitters, and you can specify your needs. We've done this for 30+ yrs. As did my parents and grandparents. (All were farmers)

Most my PNW neighbors do similar. We are all of retirement age and all love to travel. (And all have acreages)

What's the name of your travel club? Is it for all of WA?

During Covid we decided to make our vacation home (owned for 5 years at this point) into our temporary primary home and 3 years later it still is. Small town, less people, less exposure, friendlier environment. I wish we had really paid more attention to the political climate though. Previously we were only here for the summer months, so it really wasn't as apparent to us. Now for the past 3 years we understand better that this is definitely not where we want to be because of the zealots on both sides of the equation and rabid conspiracy theorists. It has really curbed our enjoyment of the town, the local small businesses, the public events, etc. We really wanted to explore being more involved in our community and had looked forward to retiring here within the next 5 years. Nope, not going to happen.

We had rented out our primary townhouse in the city to one of our kids for the last year and now are preparing to move back to the city full time again while keeping this place the summer vacation home. We are rethinking and replanning our retirement plans.

The events of the last two years have brought out zealots and conspiracy theorists alike, and a lot of them are rabid. This has happened all over, not just small towns or rural areas. I'm not sure changing your locale is going to get you more tolerable neighbors.

So am I, having gone through an experience similar to yours by retiring to a small town. I have found that living here is not like vacationing here. Being older now, I would rather have good doctors and dentists here than a good lakeside beach (which we don't have anyway), and although I prefer the mountains that make up the town "skyline" to the monstrous buildings in the city I moved from, and laugh at what the longtime locals call traffic, I would also prefer city grocery stores with healthful alternatives to the standard fare here, and better cell phone service.

So, I am preparing to move again. Not back to a huge city, but to a larger town that has more amenities than this tiny town. I don't want to get shot in a big city grocery store or its parking lot, but neither do I want to get bitten by a copperhead in my kitchen or my bed!

Have you considered moving about 25 miles or so from the city?

I live in a VERY tiny (but mostly affluent) town about 60 miles from Green Bay, and so I hear hear what you're saying, but we make a monthly trip to Green Bay, and in between visits to the city, we get all our produce and dairy at our local market or at farm stands during the summer.

Btw, all our medical needs are met just about 15 miles from out home. (HORRIBLE -- meaning very inconvenient -- veterinary services here, though, which I have already posted about.)
