The advice I would give teachers in a small town is----------don't live in the same school district you teach in. (if possible)

The extra expense and extra time of commuting is well worth it.

That is common for many such jobs as police office;can you imagine howe tired they get of p[eole asking advice and giving thenm their "suspicions" when off duty.So it could be worse for you I guess. If it bothers you then move is what I say. Lots of jobs like that can make small town livng harder for certain professiopns.

I couldn't agree more Mrs. Bewitched! That is so true about the bars and running into places with students.

True. A different town is better!

My husband is in his fifth year of teaching high school math (he's 48). We wanted to be able to live near his work, but there weren't any apartments or homes to rent (a very small town). We found a place to live in the next larger town (pop. 6,000), about half an hour from the school. Because we are in the larger town, and the only town with a Walmart of any place around, we do run into my husband's students or parents of his students at Walmart or the supermarket. Once in a while, they do want to talk to him, so I can relate to that happening.

I always loved my small town... until I started teaching there. I feel I have no privacy, rumors fly, high school cliques still holding strong with 40 year old moms. I have become depressed and feel I can't live a normal life teaching and working in my small town. It's awful and I've gone from a happy person and successful teacher when I worked in the city to very sad and feeling violated. And boy do those moms talk. I hate living here and absolutely used to love it. Don't be a teacher in the same small town where you live. You'll want to move or job change, which are both hard when You have a family or a husband who loves his job and can't really move. It's the worst decision I've ever made.
