The Bessemer and Lake Erie RR carries raw materials from the Pittsburgh and Conneaut Dock Company down to steel mills around Pittsburgh. It is definitely not a high speed train as it does not transport people.
49 mph. There's no "clickety-clack" though.. it's welded rail most all the way.
What allows for expansion and contraction in welded rail ?
They most likely have some type of overlapping expansion joints at regular intervals. I live very close to the tracks and it doesn't bother me hearing the trains. I'll start worrying when I don't hear the rail traffic !
I joke to my wife when the train comes through blowing its horn,

Well we have found ways to get electricity from the sun, we can make electricity from the wind. Now all we need to do is figure out a way to squeeze usable power out of NOISE ! (and the phrase "no we can't" is not in my vocabulary)
I lived by RR tracks up until a year ago for 18 years. After about the first 6 mos. while inside you don't even hardly hear them, you get so used to them. Outside was a lot louder and harder to ignore.

I know your pain. We'd be talking on the phone and say "train" and people knew to wait since we couldn't hear them. Stuff vibrated off shelves. I will tolerate a train horn in the distance but if I can actively hear the train noise... welll....
But I still love riding them. Planning at least one and if it can be figured two amtrak trips west in the next year. Just love the way they rock as they travel. Just hope to not get a seat mate like the one who never stopped saying she wished she'd taken the bus. Spent a LOT of time in the observation car that one.
I need a sleeper car when I ride on Amtrak. I wish they had "Tour runs" that have nothing but sleepers, observation and dining cars that would pull onto a siding and stop for the night. I've missed too much scenery riding trains at night. Folks don't ride trains for the speed or the low prices anyway.
