I find people pretty much the same everywhere. I grew up in the city (St. Louis), where there were boring people, interesting people, unpleasant people and very nice ones. It's the same in small towns or country, they are just more spread out. I live in the country now, and enjoy the quiet, the animals I have and the space. I couldn't do what I do in the city, but I see there are things I miss out on, such as a good convenient Thai restaurant.
My kids may not get to walk or bike to school, and they wish the ice cream truck would come down our street, but today we spent time grazing our sheep and found a fox den, imagined we saw porcupines in the pine trees and watched lambs chasing each other.
For liberals in the country, Wisconsin isn't bad at all. Most of my neighbors are moderate to liberal in outlook. Not like Madison, but certainly more liberal than rural MO (where my parents live) or the west (east of CA).
