I am wondering if anyone knows of a small town(below 2,500) in a country area with a college nearby?
Other criteria:
~alot of younger people, 18-25
~nice
~no sex offenders
~little crime
~very walkable
~alot of open land
~pretty
~under 20 miles away from a town with 50,000 people or more
~not a "hick town"
I am very sorry I am so picky, I just know what I want, I just haven't found it yet.

Newville, PA fits some of your criteria. It is near shippensburg, pa which has shippensburg university. Also near Carlisle, PA which has a few colleges. I do not think there are lots of young people there though.
It is a pretty town that is walkable. It has very little crime and has beautiful rolling mountains in the background.
It's about 30 miles from Harrisburg, PA, which has about 50,000 people.

If you find a town like that tell me , many of the things you are looking for are mutually exclusive of each other. A town of 2500 with a lot of young people sounds like a commune, 20 miles away from a town of 50000 sounds like a crowded suburb or bed room community, prolly no open land, and a place with open land sounds like a hick town. IMO the place you describe sounds like a place near Tahoe, Aspen, The Poconose, Sante Fe, Carmel, .....You get the drift

Several of the University of Wisconsin schools would fit into your description. Check out UW-Green Bay, UW-Eau Claire, UW-La Crosse, UW-Stout, and UW-River Falls. Green Bay has about 100,000 people in the city limits and has several small towns within driving distance. Eau Claire and La Crosse have about 50-60,000 people each. Stout is in the small city of Menomonie which is located about half an hour from Eau Claire. River Falls is a small college town about half an hour from St. Paul, Minnesota.
It would help if we knew more about what you wish to study as different schools have different strengths.
BTW, all of these schools are close to beautiful countryside and scenic areas. Wisconsin's state park system is great and we also have an abundance of national forest land.

At one point about 12 years ago I was trying desperately to get transferred to Baraboo, WI thinking it met most of those criteria (except all the young people would also be in Madison).

I had thought of moving to Newville at one point but wound up in Boiling Springs, PA, out the other side of Carlisle, and closer to Harrisburg. B.S. is a very pretty town right on the Appalachian Trail. Some younger people around associated with the nearby Allenberry Playhouse or maybe who left the trail for a bit but mostly in Harrisburg or associated with the college or separate law school in Carlisle.

Maybe the town where my high school was would qualify, Dryden, NY, home of TC3 - Tompkins Cortland Community College which has some draw outside the purely local area. Ithaca, 12 miles away, would be over 50,000 if you count the surrounding urbanized (ahem) area. For that matter, Cortland, NY City of Cortland Official Web Site would qualify except for your under 2,500 criterion, the college there is 6,000 students but you can escape that in neighborhoods with a village feel, or adjacent Homer, NY. About 20 miles to Ithaca or 30 no-traffic-Interstate miles to Syracuse.

If money is more plentiful then Cazenovia, NY with its small college but more upscale atmosphere might suit, about 20 back road sometimes traffic miles to Syracuse.

Maybe Dublin, Pulaski, Pearisburg, or Floyd VA - smaller communties on the fringe of the "New River Valley" micro-metro surrounding Virginia Tech and Radford University.

There are some places like that once you start looking at small Midwestern liberal arts colleges.

Example:

Gambier, Ohio- population 1,871 according to the 2000 census. Home to the highly regarded Kenyon College. About 30 miles from the suburbs of Columbus, OH.

Check out western Kentucky. Murray, Ky., (http://www.murrayky.gov/)population (broken link) of around 15,000 is the home of Murray State University(Murray State University on the Web), with an enrollment of around 10,000. It's further than 20 miles from a town of 50,000 or more. But with two lakes, one the largest man made lake east of the Mississippi River and a 170,000 acre national recreation area in between (Land Between The Lakes | HOME ) there's plenty of hiking and biking trails or just to get out away from town.

Take a look at Archdale NC...about 20 min from Greensboro NC. UNCG, Greensboro College, Guilford College, just to name a few.
Archdale is about 10 minutes from High Point University also.

Default Saratoga Springs, NY

You might look into Saratoga Springs NY. The outlying towns (Schuylerville, Northunderland, Gansevoort, etc.) have open land and housing is very reasonable. Skidmore College is in town of Saratoga Springs, and the areas is extremely safe with a nice walkable downtown.

Look up the counties surrounding Charlottesville, VA. For what you are describing google the area south of route 64 following route 15 or 29 (within 10-15 miles). Cost of living is dealable there. FYI north on 15/29 has more traffic/tourists/horse people. From here you can travel to blue ridge or UVA (University). Plenty of work available in Charlottesville if needed.
