We have a small barn on the property (keeps our 2 horses, hay, etc.). It has a tin or perhaps it is called aluminum roof? Common in the south I believe. No leaks that we know of, (although we have not been up on a ladder to look) but I know it does need painting or "something".
A guy just stopped by, he does custom painting/roof coating according to his card. I believe what he said it needs is something called "asphalt shingle aluminum coating", he sprays it on with an airless sprayer, says it stops the oxidizing, and should last 8 years. Does this sound right? Thanks.

Be careful of guys stopping by in a truck. Did he climb up and look at the roof or did he just see it as he was driving by. Reputable local contractors are generally a much safer way to go in the long run. I know of too many people who let someone driving by coat their roof (or driveway), only to have it wash off in the first rain.

I have to agree with rrtechno. People stopping by looking for business may not be on the up and up. My rural area has people from the cities (2-3 hours away) coming through looking for work. Many, many times locals have been ripped off. Had they just called the local guy, they would have had quality work.

I'll be the 3rd person to issue a "beware"

Here in central Minnesota we have those guys stop in . Usually the have---Mississippi license plates ( I know, seems strange) and their product lasts til the first heavy rain.

A farmer friend of mine,8 miles away, got taken just last year.

This screams "scam" to me.

Your roof is probably galvanized steel by the sounds and is probably rusting a bit. Galvanization is pretty much just a layer of zinc that erodes over the years. It adds life to the steel by being just that...being a layer that erodes. By the sounds this protective layer is gone and now the steel is starting to rust. No big deal, you got about another 8-10 years of usefulness and then it will need to be replaced.

Again I say all this in completely generic terms as there is no picture of it...just a description.

I never heard of what this person was applying (and so I am uneasy about that), but it would probably be a 1000 dollar fix to a 500 dollar replacement cost. I'd pass my friend.

If it's roof coating you need or want why not brush on your own coat?

It's possible to coat a metal roof with an aluminized asphalt coating made
just for roofing.
