Movies like "Psycho", "Wrong Turn", "Deliverance", "Cabin Fever", "I Spit On Your Grave", "Vacancy", "2001 Maniacs" "The Wicker Man" "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre", "The Devil's Rejects", etc portray rural and small town America as a place full of crazy hicks who's favorite hobbies are murder, rape, bizarre religious cults, and cannibalism.

When something is alien to a person it seems there is a tendency to idealize it or demonize it. There are several romantic comedies where the small town is idealized. There's also stories of the starlet or rich Hollywood snob going to the small town and becoming better people. (Like "Doc Hollywood", but that might also count as a romantic comedy)

A "real" presentation of a small town, good and bad, is probably always going to be rare because movies are made in large cities where most people have little actual experience of this life. Granted that could be true of certain foreign countries too, yet they'll try harder to be real there, but you also have the "Hollywood" people who "escaped" from small town America. They'd have more reason to portray it badly than to portray Nepal or Madagascar in a bad light.

It's a bit irritating, and I'm not even from a small town. Kind of highlights how small-minded even liberal Hollywood can be.

I say make the movies even worse and keep the sheep in the larger cities. More room for the rest of us to spread out and enjoy our peace and quiet.

Yeah, no doubt the rich folks who produce these flicks have homes/farms in the country and are simply trying to keep city people from invading -- LOL!

This would contrast with how city and suburban folk are portrayed as violent drug-addicted psychotics (pick any gritty urban cop show of your choice)?

We're all dirtbags according to Hollywood. At least that is what it would appear.

I'm trying to think of ANY Hollywood flick that gets this right, and can't. It seems like plots always revolve around some 'enlightened' city folks, who have to deal with all those 'backwards country types'. Lol, no mention ever seems to be made of the city folks who come out here and get themselves in trouble because they watched to much Disney channel and take wild animals for granted, or don't realize that they have to TAKE supplies into wild areas (no 7-11's around the next bend of that sandwash folks) oh my, I could go on and on.

Actually all of the movies I mentioned involve big city folks going into a small town or rural area and getting themselves in trouble with 1 or more of the locals for "trespassing" into their neck of the woods, and there for the crazy local or locals decide that these big city folks or person needs to die.
