Is it legal to remove your mailbox, and therefore not accept mail? I was told by the post office that:
1. You must keep a mailbox, but you can personally refuse mail by marking the mail "refused" and putting it back in the mailbox. However, I find this to be too tedious.
2. You can remove your mailbox completely and you must sign a contrary order (which I think will put us on a government watchlist, and I don't really want to sign anything). Isn't it my right to refuse mail?
Hardest part is people think we are crazy for not wanting mail- we are not anti-government zealots, we just feel that in this day and age, we don't need mail and it is mostly advertisments, bills, and other junk that only causes stress. We have also given up our cell phones, cable, and email. We are finding life to be a lot less hectic without these "modern conveniences"
Has anyone here removed their mailbox? Do people think you are nuts?
Oh wow I dont think it is possible for you to live w/o email or cell phones . how would you call anyone if you had a problem in your house and need someone to come fix it . wow I would be lost w/o a cell phone and I need to pay my bills .
There is an episode of Seinfeld on this very topic. Kramer tried to cancel his mail. Newman totally freaked out.
Honestly, mail is going extinct. If it were not for write letters with a few family members and getting the weekly newspaper, I wouldn't need it.

We currently are living without both. We do maintain a landline in case of emergency. We pay our bills online.

email and cellphones appeared only what? 10 years ago. People lived without them before. People had landline and snail mail (the snail mail bills can now be replaced with online bills).
I'm pretty sure Federal Law requires that you have to have a mailbox. And to answer your next question...yes, even bums and hobos. However, a strict interpretation in the statute does not require the mailbox to open or even have a slot in it. I simply hung a sign on a big oak tree in my front yard that says.."mailbox". The first week or so really messed up the mailman, now he doesn't even do much more than slow down each day to see if the sign is still up. Victory is mine!
The addressee may refuse to accept a mailpiece when it is offered for delivery.
