I like eXmark, Scag, Gravely, and old John Deere 430 and 455 diesels. I prefer zero-turns for cutting grass, garden tractors for multi-tasking. Buckets are next to useless on 2wd garden tractors (get 4wd), but make an absolutely wonderful wheel barrow.
As far as I know, eXmark is the only remaining manufacturer of a truly commercial grade self-propelled 21-inch "push mower." I do still see old SB21 John Deere and Honda push mowers out there still cutting though.
l loved John Deere products when I was cutting for a living, because parts were reasonably priced and, if ordered before 2:00 p.m., were at the dealer by 10:00 next day. Since that time, John Deere dealer cooperatives have apparently pushed parts prices to much higher levels; one part for my Gator that I purchased in 2009 for $82 had increased to $162 in 2014. Accordingly, I can not recommend any new John Deere product until they convince me that they have ceased such predatory pricing policies.
My John Deere 318 is still going strong since 1984. I've only had to do minor repairs.
Love the 318, 332,455 but the 430 is my favorite. I love that big front end! I would t trade my wright stander for one tho, at least for grass cutting.
My old kubota b71 was a hell of a garden tractor (on steroids). My kioti dk40 is almost in a class by itself, the kubota grand l39 comes close (nice hydrostatic trans) but can't compare to loader strength, hydro pump gpm's etc. It's a beast. I want a 430 just to tool around on.
When my Husqvarna was layed up, I bought a JD S240 for a lawn tractor.
I sold in FL and left the Husky, and took the JD with me.
The S240 has the same drive train as the 300 series,
Bought a Crapsman few years ago. I've told my wife, family, coworkers, AND Sears that I will never again buy a Craftsman. T 2400, what has happened...when I first got it, the wires was crossed for seat switch. Had to stand and start. Yea...wow. Then reverse started to go out. Tech came and cleaned the tranny. Then transmission started to go out. Had to order a new one. Good thing for warranty, right? The mandrel, or whatever it's called broke. Luckily the blade did not injure or kill me. Next came the deck. Will not stay level for anything. The weld near the back had broke off. Way after the level issue.
Now the warranty is expired and could not afford the $600 for the extension.
Needless to say, I'm saving up for a better quality mower. Will be checking back for ideas.
Oh...I cut 3 acres. Flat terrain, no rocks or other debris for damage. When cutting I'm always sweeping views to make sure I don't run anything over. I just throw it in the neighbors yard. Haha...Just kidding!
JD - I'm on my 2nd JD riding mower. My first lasted 13 years and the current one is near that age now. I mow 1/2 acre+ and use the mower to pull my JD utility cart, hauling all sorts of things.
I'm told that if you buy a JD, DO NOT buy from a box store but rather, buy from the JD dealership itself. Believe it or not, it is a different mower and the box store JD is not made as well.
Maintain it above and beyond what is recommended, using only JD parts. I'll probably have to either have some engine work done on my current JD or buy a new one in the next year or so and for certain, I will buy another JD.

Big box stores only sell "branded" JD products built for JD by the people who build the junk price brands. Not nearly as good a the JD built products. Spend the money and buy a real JD product to save money in the long run.
