Hi nhyrnut!

I get a twofer here: I can (in a single post) offer the original poster Burlington Vermont for consideration, and point out that liberal, tree-huggin' Vermont has a Republican Governor.

I have heard Ithaca is very cool too. How about Brattleboro, Vt. or Putnam? I live in Taos, NM, and it's certainly liberal, but it's many other things too!! In fact, the local Native Americans at the Taos Pueblo voted something like 95% democratic, still leading the way, aren't they?

How about a small town with a thriving economy and nice climate? Carrboro, NC, population 10,000. The town had an openly gay mayor who was re-elected three times, an amazing music/arts scene, an excellent community food co-op and it's right next to Chapel Hill, home of the University of North Carolina. Jobs are not difficult to find, it has a moderate four season climate and is noted as being one of the most liberal/progressive communities in the Southeast. The public school system is one of the best in the US, there is a FREE public transit system and two great downtowns that practically run together (Carrboro and Chapel Hill). Combined population of just 80,000, yet convenient to the larger cities of Durham and Raleigh. Lived there for four years, great place for singles or families.

I went back to my home state of KS to finish college at KU and loved Lawrence. It's not really a small town -I'd call it a big town or small city, but it has a lot of small town charm. The only place in Kansas I'd ever live.

So why is it that all the liberal towns and cities are so expensive to live in? Seems like the more liberal, the more expensive? Like here in Denver it's fairly expensive, even moreso in Boulder.

I know of only two small liberal towns....Oberlin and Yellow Springs in Ohio. However, I'd like to move from Ohio, so I'm trying to find a friendly, progressive small town.

Any suggestions?
Lawrence Kansas. A great small town in one of only two blue counties in Kansas!
