I like it as a painting, really I do, but it has errors in concept that make it humorous.
I've not ever seen morels growing on open ground,
I've not ever seen a whistlepig surveying territory from an exposed position
I've not ever seen trees cut that didn't have a hinge point,
I've not seen farmers plow directly down a steep slope,
I've not seen a prosperous hill farm,
I've not seen cattle around a barn where they haven't trod the grass to mud,
I've not seen a raw dirt road without ruts,
And so on.
However, it does give that nice feel that pastureland and hayfields can have in spring when the grasses and weeds appear well-behaved, and life is coming out of unexpected places. Capturing that and the particular greens and blues in oils is surprisingly difficult. Like I said, I really do like the work.
Hi Marmac, it's was not at all unusual for different generations to have houses on the same property in time now past and share the choirs of running the family farm. I myself live in rural Alabama on fifty purchased by me and my four other brothers 35 years ago. My mothers house is down a hill from my family. My grandparents lived in a house acoss a cow pasture from me. Three other brothers and their families live on the property in their homes as well, lol. Have a nice day.
Where I live there are a LOT of prosperous hill farms. Outer Washington County, in Northwestern Oregon, has very expansive farms on lush hills, and many of them have "nice" houses as depicted here. In fact, this painting would well depict farming in this area.
The concept of old simple farmhouses on flat lands is stereotyped in some people's minds because of the movies, I think. I grew up in a dairy in the flattest valley imaginable ~ which was definitely beautiful ~ but it's a whole different rural scape where I'm at now.
