Wow I haven't checked this thread since I posted and it seems like it's quite the hot topic.
FYI I moved to stockton without visiting it first and that was a mistake. I moved to Brookside and it is a nice little corner of Stockton, but you have to remember that you still have to live in stockton, buy groceries, go to the bank, and if you dare go to the "mall". You won't be able to do any errands without some stranger walking up to you asking if you can spare a dollar or two. You'll drive down the street and look in the car next to you only to see the local boyz in da hood. It's bad, trust me, turn on the tv and you'll see a local channel dedicated to showing pictures of felons wanted for...just a little murder, rape, armed robbery ect..)
Lodi is much better and closer. I delivered my baby in Dameron hospital, it was fine.
I took my family to the local fourth of july celebration and we were the only white people there, well us and the police. (not that there's anything wrong with that...)

Could I ask you what Dameron was like??? I've just accepted a job to work there, will be moving over from the UK in about 18 months.
having read other comments I think I would be looking to live in Lodi or up towards sacremento....is it really that bad. I'm quite worried now and wondering if I should have accepted the job offer

Too bad you couldn't get a job offer from Mercy Hospital in Folsom. I was a patient there and I've never seen better Doctors or Nurses. Nice place. If I was in the medical field, that's were I would want to work. Folsom is a very nice place to live. Excellent schools. That comes with a price though, as home prices are quite high. That is the reality of California though.
Put in 2 or 3 years at Dameron in Stockton and then look north to UC Davis Medical Center or Folsom Mercy etc. You might have to plan on a rather long commute to get your kids into a good school. You might look toward the areas east of Stockton like Linden, Lockeford, Jackson etc. or go north more toward Sacramento. You can research the high schools off this site. Just do a city search for example: Linden, ca That will give you info on the city and then click the high school for that city. You'll see some ranking and then test scores etc.
I myself would probably look in the Mother Lode foothills near Jackson etc. or maybe toward Elk Grove. You will also have to realize that the fog in the Stockton (Central Valley) region can be very bad in the winter. This will affect your commute times and perhaps your choice of hours.

Thanks for that.. my initial contract is for 2 years then I plan to move.
I have enough time to plan the move and hopefully get the right place to live/schools etc
I'm so pleased that I have found this site and plan on keeping up to date with the goings on in CA

Stockton is a hole. Pretty much all of the valley is.
Lodi is probably one of the only decent towns left there. And Ripon, but Ripon is further down south toward Modesto.
Stay away from Manteca and Stockton.

By the way...Dameron is not a nice hospital. Quite old and run down. It's overcrowded and full of gun shot victims all of the time. That's Stockton for ya.

re:how is stockton
you make this place sound horriable it's not too bad i've lived here my entire life. i like it. the only problem is the only entertainment is downtown which is kinda far away none of us teenagers have anything to do so that time can be used in a good way. so instead most people around my age (13-19) endup getting in trouble. and thats why stockton looks so bad if the city would put up some more movie theaters, a skating rink or 2, public pools where you dont have to have a membership but u have to pay like 3 or4 dollars then it would be better. believe it or not there ae people here that are doing good in life. and as for dameron its ok. but the hospital staff could be brighter i had my son there and withiin the 3 days i was there they messed upso much that i could've had a BIG lawsuit...

Stockton is a city you drive through, then realize how lucky you are because you live in a better place. Most people here aren't even American.

I love how the people that bash Stockton haven't really enjoyed Stockton for what it's worth, you people should be ashamed. I've lived here most my life and I love it. Cinnabon, look into town homes around Embarcadero Dr off Benjamin Holt.
