i would recomend the hour commute, it is better to drive an hour than to wake up for your ten minute commute to find your car missing

Copperopolis is a real gem 55 minutes from Stockton. Not many know about this wonderful place. Lake Tullock is there, homes are well priced the scenery is rolling hills and oaks - like Tuscany, no crime, it is quiet.
Castle and Cook put in a well regarded golf resort. Donald Trump is building another there. There is a new "Old Town" , very charming, that will have restaurants and stores in addition to those downtown.
Copperopolis has a resort lifestyle!
I urge people to see this great place!

We would be looking to rent, probably a townhouse for about 1600 - 1800/mo. Are there towns in between the two, in case I wind up working in Sacto? Also, is Stockton nice or not as nice as Sacto?

Any info would be greatly appreciated!
Imagine a place where drive by shootings are common and a city that makes the news nightly for crime. I am sure there are some parts that are nice but I would try to look elsewhere if you are able. Sorry you Stockton people who get mad about this post but you DO make the nightly news.....

Default Stockton

After about 25 years in and around Stockton I'd say it is a mixed bag. It still has some of the valley cow town atmosphere, I note that when I come back from a trip to Oakland. You feel nervous because of the gangs. You don't want to make eye contact or flash your lights sometimes--these gangsters are volatile or so I read. We go there in daylight, the malls are well controlled, you keep your eyes open in the parking lots, but we haven't had any trouble. The regular folks in Stockton tend toward a little bit raunchy. I think if you check you'll see that education levels are low compared to the Bay Area. On the other hand, the lack of big city sophistication can be refreshing at times. There are nearby small towns that will get you out of Stockton proper, like Linden, Lockeford, Clements, some small cities like Lodi, Galt, Tracy, Lathrop, all an easy commute. But there isn't much work in Stockton to commute to. The real work is in Sacramento, which has turned into a not so good commute in the past 10 years. The corporate bookstores are pleasant, the Starbucks don't attract any rough elements. I wouldn't advise living in Stockton proper--there are too many other options. And Stockton after dark could be a challenge.
