Drive time ?'s
Hello all,
I am looking to move to Sac from the bay area, and will be working near the hwy 80 split to Reno when coming from the bay area. I am going to purchase a home, but I need a little help so i dont end up going nuts with a commute.
I am looking at buying a place in Elk Grove, East of hwy 99 but i am concerned about a commute time. I would leave around 6am and return around 3:30
any help is greatly appreciated

There are plenty of experts to counsel you on your concerns, in fact over 1,000 in Sac. - they are on the web or in the phone book at your local library under "REAL ESTATE".

So you are working up towards Roseville - or AT the 80/99 split?
Elk Grove commute to Roseville will SUCK - it's long boring congested traffic area...and 6 am won't help.
Is there a reason you are looking at Elk Grove? DO you have kids?

I will be working just off the reed ave exit on hwy 80.
no kids for me and none planned in the near future. I somewhat like the elk grove area, but i am open to other suggestions. My budget for a home is 350-400 and it seems like that can get me a good house in the Elk Grove area. Plus there is a good possibility that my wife will be working in Lodi after a year or so.

Then Elk Grove is a good fit - but you still will have a bear of a commute - it's hard to avoid in Sacramento
And you have a nice price range for a small starter home too!

I was afraid of that. Living in the bay area i am used to a 45 minute commute each way, but would you say it would be far worse than that?

NAHHHHH - 45 minutes should be fine (and as always the earlier the better)
But it's a llot when you see how fast it is without traffic
Just be careful of Fog - that area is known for some BAD accidents

Have you considered buying a home in West Sac or maybe the western part of Natomas instead of Elk Grove? There are lots of nice new homes going in and the commute would be very short and quick. Lots of stores, etc. are going in around Reed Ave. too (like Ikea).

I have thought about it, and it depends on where my wife ends up. Although i have heard all the horror stories about Natomas and flooding. I will be heading to the area in the next couple weeks to look at homes, so i will include the Natomas area too.
I am always weary of buying into a newly developed area as you have no idea what the neighborhood will be like. I would prefer a little older more established neighborhood.
thank you all for your comments

They are moving pretty quickly to fix the levees in the North Natomas area- there's a recent article in the Sac Bee about it.
