I was going to mention that West Sacramento is a very different city than it was 7 years ago--if the last time they visited was in 2003, they probably wouldn't recognize most of the area along Southport or the big power center along I-80--but it sounds like they don't even want to talk about West Sac or anything in the Sacramento limits--they're dead set on a nearby suburb.

The more things change the more they remain the same.

Read about the latest news regarding the gang injunction. West Sac is still a hell hole unless you enjoy the sight of streetwalkers doing the stroll on W. Capitol Blvd.

Yep I'd say Fair Oaks, Orangevale, Loomis, Newcastle, Penryn, maybe even Auburn but that's more of a commute, it is nice to be above the valley a little though as some days it's sunny there and Sac is a fog pit. And its usually a few degrees cooler up the hill and definitely cools down more at night.

Go East to get to the foothills if you want cooler climate. If you are looking for a more rural atmosphere, with access to good schools and kid activities, you might look in the Shingle Springs/Cameron Park area. Now you are 25 miles to downtown Sac, but there are more options for bigger lots, a more "country" feel, and it's getting to be more affordable. You are slightly higher elevation which helps with the heat, but not much.

I'm going to second NinaN - Cameron Park is what you are looking for, and I think the schools are good.

Winters is nice, and the schools are small and homey, but they are by no means "good" (by regular, test score standards). Having lived in Winters and Dixon for K-12, you are looking at slightly corrupt districts with easy access to drugs and a lot of bilingual classes, which I suppose is a number of schools in rural parts of California =)
