The drive from Luther Pass to Gardnerville is a good area in October too.

This is the area where Hwy 88 and 89 intersect.

Good timing for this thread, on the 25th will be driving from SoCal to Lake Tahoe, and to do something different, will come in from the west. Up 49 through the Gold Country, but not all the way to the 50, just to Jackson and then up the 88. Have only been on 88 once, it was in the summer many years ago, coming the other way, but do recall wonderful scenery. Unless there is an early snowstorm over 8500' plus Carson Pass, should be a pleasant trip; fall color in the foothills and then gorgeous mountains.

Don't say "the 50 or the 88" unless you want to be peged as a tourist from Southern CA. Hwy 88 or simply 88 is how it is pronounced outside of SoCal.

FYI Tuolumne Co. Should be pretty bright in 10 days-2 weeks. The Maples are just starting to turn. At my place-el.4000 the Oaks go crazy in the later part of October.

My apologies to the late Al Capp, creator of the wonderful Lil Abner comic strip, and to Billy DeBeck and Fred Lasswell, who did Barney Google and Snuffy Smith.

Carson Pass over Highway 88 and Luther Pass Highway 89 are your best bets. You will not be disappointed. Sacramento Bee's website has leaf status information from one of their photo editors every year, search it or try Fall Leaves - Sacramento Recreation and Places to Visit - Sacramento, Gold Country, Lake Tahoe, San Francisco | Sacramento Bee
