Sounds like Curtis Park is what you're looking for: close to downtown, served by light rail, adjacent to community parks, lots of trees, some nice cultural amenities and neighborhood-serving retail close by. Look at the area between Broadway and Sutterville Road north-south, Light Rail/Union Pacific main line and Highway 99 east-west, and a pretty liberal neighborhood outlook. If you want to be a bit closer to the central city, look at Poverty Ridge/Newton Booth, just north of Broadway from the area I just described. Much of the central city will remind you of the historic neighborhoods of Arcata and Eureka, just a lot hotter and with more trees. Curtis Park is more of a late 19th/early 20th century streetcar suburb. Land Park, on the west side of the light rail tracks, is another option. They are a bit closer to the Sacramento River and its bike trail.

Here is a page of local farmer's markets:

Certified Farmers' Markets Times and Locations

Some close during the winter months, but the biggest one is the year-round one under the freeway between W and X and 6th and 8th Streets, a bit north of Land Park. There are also a lot of mid-sized supermarkets in the area (some specializing in Hispanic or Asian foods) that carry locally grown vegetables, and the Natural Foods Co-Op is on Alhambra and S Street.

I agree with Wburg. Curtis Park or Landpark are nice neighborhoods with a good family feel and close to the rail w/easy downtown access.

Schools in Landpark are better and top notch in Sacramento.
