I went back to Upstate NY, Syracuse-Utica area. To compare them, well they are polar opposites of one another. In NY, it's an old place, very depressed economy, cold and snowy in the winter, people get seasonal depression, and most people just have a dreary look on their faces. The pros to it are the fact that it's a slower pace of life, you have more time to refine the simple things. Family is highly important there, whereas I feel out here, people are so caught up in making money and flipping houses and doing the 10billion things there are to do that family gets placed last. When going to restaurants or other places, everyone speaks English!! I forgot what that was like. It's just an easier less complex way of life. Every place has it's pros and cons. I wouldn't have moved 3000 miles from there if I really wanted to stay. But now that I am away, I see that it's not a horrible place. My family is there, it now makes it a great place. Sacramento has lost it's shine with me over the past year. I feel it's a place I'm not long for. As someone else put it, California is a great place when you are single, now that I will be getting married, I'm ready to go to a more family oriented place with a slower way of life. And seasons. I miss living in the snow, not driving to it on weekends with 200,000 other people just to pollute it all!

I live in Roseville, which is expensive but family-friendly. I'm originally from Auburn, NY. Now THAT is a depressed town! I've heard such horror stories about it, I'm afraid to even go back for a visit. But I still would love to move back there. Maybe a realistic compromise would be to own a vacation home near or on a lake and visit when I can.

I agree. Family is last in California as a general rule. Obviously there are always exceptions. I have noticed that family values seem to be priority as soon as you go east of Nevada! I think Sac town is still pretty cool but has lost some of it's luster. The air quality stinks.

Without a doubt Sac is a cool and great place to live and be at the moment. Things are happening all over the place in Sac. Between all the building going on downtown and the general idea that this will be a higher tier city is great. But with that comes a lot of negative too. I've found that every place has its good and bad. Where I'm from in NY, good and bad. Sacramento, good and bad. You just have to choose your amounts accordingly. I miss the snow!

Moved out of Sac & Ca about 2 1/2 yrs ago... I am a native born California too... Best move I've ever made.
Only thing (besides family) I miss about Sacramento is Tahoe. Love Tahoe.

Could be a nice place..
I remember moving to sac in 1984 when I was a freshman in HS from LA with my folks. Back then it seemed like the most beautiful place in the world. I left for a few years at 18 and when I came back it was like the traffic/population doubled. If there were better planning I think this city would be a lot better place to live. The more people that move in, the more money our city makes- but you'd never know it by riding light rail or visiting old town.. They build and build more houses, and then when congestion is almost unbearable they decide to add a lane somewhere. And where's the parks? I have to pay a mello-roo to get a patch of grass next to my 0 lot line! and most of the other parks I wouldn't allow my kids in. Anyways, I hope it gets better soon. Good luck with your move!
