We have been in Sacramento for two years and we really, really dislike it! It's boring, boring, boring and yes it's ridiculously expensive to buy a house but we lived in SF before this so it's much cheaper, however, you get what you pay for. In SF I was never bored and I did not feel like I live in an oven for five months of the year! I was ready for a quieter lifestyle but this is just yucky. It's not a city or small town-it's VERY suburban. People go to the mall, I can't get a decent haircut and we're in Land Park where residents think they're better than other people! HA!! I have no idea why-it's cute but very podunk-my husband and I are always laughing about it. He's a native San Franciscan & I'm a born and raised Chicago girl and we've seen the real thing-Sack of Tomatos does not have it. I hate being negative but I really think this city is an ARMPIT ))HAHAHA

You haven't looked very far if you haven't found a good stylist. I used to go to a great little salon off of Douglas that I had gone to for the last five years. They do quite a few on air personalities. I used to also frequent a salon downtown on 28 & K that area that was quite posh. Pick up the Sacramento Magazine, also there are a few good salons in the Pavillions.
Edit Added....Again...if you are looking for San Francisco..this isn't it. I guess that is what makes SF so special and also more expensive.

California or Florida
So I've never ever posted before on a board so I'm not even sure if I'm putting this in the right place and I apologize for it's length but I am desperate for answers and this forum and it's participants seems pretty interesting. I've been agonizing for days on whether to stay in Sacramento (CA in general) or move to St. Petersburg / Tampa (FL in general) area. I moved to Sac from NYC last year for a lobbying job that now went away. The timing now is actually perfect for me to take the July bar exam and become a lawyer (hopefully) since lobbying wasn't as interesting or stable as I had hoped. Now I just need to decide if I will settle in Florida or Cali for most of the future. I DO NOT want to have to take the hellish bar exam more then once but you really need to take the exam in the state where you will be working. I need to make my decision NOW and here's what I've come up with:
CALIFORNIA:
No humidity and relatively nice winters depending on where you are (I don't dig cold)
Way to high housing costs (I'd really rather own then rent)
Only 2 friends in San Fran and 1 in Sac and I'm finding it hard to connect to people and have no family in the area (I think I'm a bit NY abbrasive for these nice folks over here)
FLORIDA:
Big cities like Tampa have higher rents then Sac and on par with LA
Much lower housing costs to buy and property taxes seem similar to CA
Oppresive humidity in summer but beautiful winters (I'm kinda used to bad summers from NYC)
A little bit of family in area and a cousin who's already offered to set me up with a guy (lol ) and I haven't met anyone in Sac since I've been here
Bigger Jewish population (Which I am, although I'm not AT ALL religious but really relate culturally )
FINALY, My last concern is with the job market. I would like to do Wills, Trusts, Estates law but I figure that both states are full of older folks and rich folks in general so I think the job market should be pretty much the same.
SO, ANY THOUGHTS ANYONE???????????

I'm from NY too and moved to Sac 5 years. I found my abrasiveness has mellowed over the years, but I still have it deep down. I never want to lose it either. Frequently I get called the "fast talking NYer." Keep your identity, you will meet friends. I've met some really great people here. As for FL. I've never been there, even though every NYer goes there every winter to escape the cold. It's a place I've never been, and never plan on going to. Too many other great places than Florida to go to.

Are Sacramento and Florida your only choices? Consider doing some traveling and a lot of research, then picking the place you want to live. Rent for six months or so, and if you still like it there, take the bar exam for that state.

Do alot of research if you plan on moving to Florida, I know calif is expensive, however Florida has had a cost of living that has skyrocketed in just a few years, that is definitely a red warning flag, how fast it happened. If you read the Florida post, and there are a ton of them, the dislike for that state is even worse than for California If you do decide to go and can afford it, and want the tampa area, then you might like St Pete more so than Tampa. It is no longer the old people capitol of the world, it is young, has the nicest downtown and activities around much more so than Tampa, and the ocean is right near by. Tampa actually is quite a ways inland, and more of a high crime and good ole boys feel to it, as soon as you leave the central core. Of course I could say come up here to Portland but somehow I think you want to be closer to your people and a better climate, can't say I blame you.

At Least We're Sincere
Hey Yellowbird, Why is it that there aren't ANY decent hairdressers in SAC?? I was constantly on the lookout for one but never found it either!!!!!! I think you and I are suffering from culture shock in a major way when it comes to SAC. I am originally from the UK which has plenty of great architecture and SF of.......... that's what Brits were born to do - moan and complain about the weather and their general 'lot' in life!!!! ))HAHAHA
Well...at least we're sincere!!This place is strange. People look forward to waking up on Saturday and mowing the lawn. It's really suburban here-it's just not a city and there really is no culture. My next door neighbor's fiance actually said something about "global warning" and I said "You mean global warming?" That just sums this place up-out of touch. I could take the weather if there was something going on but there just isn't. We'll be leaving soon because I don't want to be bitter I want BETTER
