Thegoodlife is on a distinguished road
Mary...move to Los Angeles, and live in one of the valleys. A lot of my Jewish friends live in the San Fernardo Valley and the Santa Clarita Valley. I prefer the Santa Clarita Valley myself, its growing in leaps and bounds. You won't have trouble finding work either, and you would meet alot new friends with similar cultures and taste. A lot of my bosses were transplants from New York. Encino might be an option for you, or West LA (near UCLA) if you didn't like to commute from the valley, it will depend where you work.
Good Luck!

Default Our Own Selifshness has Made life difficult in CA

I think you hit the nail on the head...no one can afford a house in any half way decent part of California, or even some of the crappier areas.

I do think corporations and state government are to blame. But its also US CALIFORNIANS, TOO! We're notorious as a state for "wanting everything both ways". We want cheap housing, but don't want it built in our backyards. We want low taxes, but don't want cuts in education or social services (which consume 80% of the state budget).

So I think you made a cheap shot at Arnold. It's easy to say Arnold is a bone head...but quite frankly....the bone headedness in state government has gone on for a long, long time. And the citizens of this state, like yourself, seem to conveniently ignore the fact that their own short sightedness and greed are part of the problem.

A BIG PART of the reason for the high housing costs in Caliofornia is the anti-growth mentality we have here. Once people "get their house" they don't want new houses in their back yard....and the political process allows more citizen input in planning issues than in other states. So existing homeowners can effectively limit the growth and this story is repeated in most parts of the state. Since not much new housing gets built....prices skyrocket. This process has been going on for the better part of 20 years, and nothing has been done about it.

Another contributing factor is that when Prop 13 was passed back in 1978 (limiting property taxes)...it gave cities no financial incentive to build new housing because the property taxes didn't cover the cost of providing services to new residents.

Of course, the reason why Prop 13 was passed was because state & local government was jacking up property taxes like they do in New England.

So I think the story of California's current mess goes way back to the 1970s, if not further back.

Wouldn't it be better to get to the root of the problem instead of running away? Do you ever fear that one of these days in the not-too-distant-future the same problems that drove you out of Sac will occur in NC as well? What then? Another move? Are we all doomed to a bedouin-like existence - constantly pulling up stakes, uprooting family and saying good-bye to friends to search for our version of paradise? quote]

I agree. It seems that everyone in America is "looking" for a better place to live instead of making the place where they live better. People complain about the traffic and air pollution....yet they drive to work 20 miles one way in their SUVs. They never seem to notice that THEY THEMSELVES contribute to a lot of the problems. Then they move somewhere else and bring the same attitudes and lifestyles to their new hometowns that made their original hometowns unliveable.

I agree. It's very difficult to successfully raise kids in CA unless you're loaded, which most of us aren't. It seems most of the people having kids nowadays in CA are the immigrant underclass who have low expectations and/or don't know any better.

I wouldn't mind staying in California. I really do like this state, although Seattle and Portland are very nice as well. I essentially grew up in Orange County and that will always be my home. OC and Sacramento are worlds apart on so many levels. There are millions of people that could go on a trash-fest about Orange County, as it is far from perfect. But what I really miss about it is the overall feelling of safety I had when I lived there. I miss the wide open boulevards and freeways like Beach Boulevard, Jamboree Road, and the 55 and 57 freeways. Even though there is PLENTY of traffic there as well, it always felt like there was enough room for everyone despite the congestion. Roadways there are also maintained immaculately, are safely designed, and people drive more carefully and are courteous there as well. In Sacramento, much of the region is so ghetto and trashy. People drive here like they've obtained their driver's license from some third-world country and the roadways are a virtual war zone much of the day. Their is no beach, little culture, and a decaying downtown. The summers are opressively hot and the air quality is in the crapper most of the year and getting worse. I have often become extremely depressed when I drive around witnessing how run-down, poverty stricken, and delapitated this city actually is. I feel like I am drowning in this California backwater and have been agressively pursing a transfer with my employer for the past six months. Sacramento is not a city that was designed to handle the enormmous growth and sprawl that the region has undergone and it really seems like the infrastucture is ready to collapse in the near future. The quality of life here has suffered miserably compared to when I moved up in 1995.

Default Nowhere to run

Sacramento may not be Camelot, but it does offer a jumping off location to many activities and points within a few minutes or hours of here.
The mountains are an hour and a half; The ocean less than two on an average day; farmland within a few minutes; and waterways abound. Sac may not have it all, but you can reach it from here relatively quick and easy. Now the quality of life here is better than some other areas, but it is a far cry from what it used to be. California in general has slipped in the same fashion. But if you let it slip here, you will do the same wherever you go. The only people responsible for the deterioration of an area are the inhabitants. Northern California has three basic things going for it:
Food, water, and temperate climate.
People have gravitated towards those things since the beginning of civilization. Nothing wrong with that really, unless you let people gorge themselves on the resources at your expense. Moving away from the offending parties may just force you to subtract one or more of the three basics.
