Now does that mean that it can't improve or do more things to be a growing and vibrant city? Absolutely, it definately can be improved upon and I think that is where I stated in a previous post...its called "putting your money where you mouth is". Don't just whine, do something about it. I was a business owner for many years and I loved making my little world better for my employees and their families.

I don't even live in Sacramento anymore, but it has a very special place in my heart. Now I live in another "cowtown" Fort Worth
Is it Fort Worth Texas?

I moved to Coeur d'Alene Idaho in June and now really appreciate what I did have. If you are looking to move to Northern Idaho be prepared for constant cloudy days in the winter (I really miss the sun!) and the people here are lets just say a little slower paced. There are many Californians that move here most like it but some I believe are just stuck here now, and a few we have met can't wait to leave.
The summers are wonderful warm days and cool nights.
The shopping is non-existant, you can drive to Spakane Valley for an OK mall but no Roseville Galleria for sure. And I hope you don't like to dine out because there is not much of that either.I have been to Spokane a few times and didn't really like it, pretty dirty city and the crime rate is pretty high as well.
My suggestion is that you visit here multiple time before moving, there are some very nice homes but unlesss you are wanting to spend at least 400k you will not get the nice neighborhood to go with it. Many neighborhoods have a real lack of caring about their landscaping and many homes here have vinyl siding (yes the plastic siding that is on motor homes) that really doesn't improve the area.
We actually had someone say to us that if you landscape your backyard you must have more money than brains, that should give you a little insight about how some think here.
Don't get me wrong the lakes are wonderful, downtown Coeur d'Alene is great in the summer, but I would much rather visit here than live here.
We are on our way out, now we just need to find a new place.
Hope this helped good luck!
Thank you for this post. I move to Sacramento a about 5 years ago from Texas after I was diagnosed with a type of Rhinitis that Houston's air quality was making it worse. Humidity there making the heat harder o endure as well. Sacramento is hot too but drier. I moved here because I had a sister here. Not that i have any sense of family since she has become worse than before but I can't just move like others being a single female, originally from SE Asia and hence am sure New England area wouldn't offer me the same thing it offers to others as far as social scene is concerned since I am not white.

Anyway, I have to remain in CA and since SF Aby Area is expensive and Southern CA's air quality is bad unless I am rich which I am not to afford ..

So, here I am ..praying that Sacramento doesn't get worse...

Actually, I left the Sacramento region (Folsom) a few months ago and I'm ready to go back. Yes, there are some areas of New England that are cheap. I happened to pick a place that is just too expensive. It's isolated as well. As much as I thought I wanted to get out of suburbia and have a simpler life, I realized I am so spoiled with having conveniences around me.

Question Leaving Sac

Back in '94, I had an opportunity to move from LA to Sac. At the time, the rent and cost of living was so much lower than Southern CA. But, I got accepted into my undergrad program and ended up staying. I have lived in Elk, WA near Spoakne and visited Coeur d' Alene, ID 2 years ago. It is so beautiful there. There are many other towns nearby too that are quite liveable. Idaho is Idaho. It is not like it is here.

Southern CA has so many pockets, and sprawling suburbs. You would think you were on a different planet depending on where you were at. One night in Huntington Beach, you may go to a restaurant/bar on Main Street where people dance while listening to an alternative rock band. Several miles and a couple of freeways away, you may go to a club in Commerce where people dance to flamenco, salsa and tejano music. There is plenty of diversity in Southern CA. But, it is kind of segregated by choice. People stick with their own and have no desire to mingle with other cultures. The biasis and indifference to other ethinicities keeps Southern CA residents apart and estranged.

Default On my way out

I am already planning to leave Sacramento and California. I can totally empasize with your concern about the cost of living here. I was fortunate enough to purchase my home 11 years ago, though the ongoing increase in cost of living is of concern to me. My move was precipitated by a job change; something I initiated. My wife and I are relocating to Winston-Salem, NC. There are things that I will miss about CA (Ive been here 20 years), but I also know that there are a lot of other nice areas of the country as well. We are very much looking forward to our new life in North Carolina. Not so much the drive though (me after 8 days in the car).

Not to sound like the new member of the NC chamber of commerce, but NC, especially Charolette, Raliegh-Durham and other parts are really growing (in a good way I hope) and seem to offer a very nice lifestyle that is actually affordable. WOW...what a concept.

Hope this helps!

Default The 'i hate californians' club

So for anybody that wishes to move, how are you preparing for the anti-CA peeps of your new homes? I am moving to WA and I am dreading the first few 'so....you're not from here, are you?'. And I think it's hilarious that we, as Californians, understand that our state has its faults and wish to find a better community but that we're actually ostrasized by other communities simply because we lived in CA at one time. It's very regionist.

And I think the friendliest place I have ever lived was Vegas but I think that was because most people are, in fact, transplants.

The Calif stigma you are talking about in WA - doesn't really exist. No one ever faulted me for being from Calif.

The only thing that's different up here in WA, is everyone IS friendly but on the average usually keep to themselves...I think they all hole up in their houses once Fall weather (see that as 50 degrees) hits. As a Calif it just takes a little more work to meet people and really be open, because you have to come to them.

Plus Sacramento is hyper friendly and happy - everytime I fly in it shocks me how many people are smiling or waving - and everyone is SO polite. You won't notice it til you've been in WA for a while then it will be an eye opener!

Really?? That is wonderful news!

And yes, we are like little puppies on crack. We NorCal folks just can't help but want to get to know everybody we meet. It could be a little disconcerting to a reserved person I suppose.
