Leaving California

I am moving out of Sacramento to the Midwest. I hate this state. It's too polluted and to expensive to live. It is also a bad state to raise a family.

I've been to the Midwest before (Iowa and Nebraska, specifically). I'm a California native, and if I didn't have all my family living here, plus my job and network of friends, I wouldn't mind living in the Midwest. I found it to be slower paced, laid-back, small-townish and friendly compared with Southern California---not to mention that the cost of living in the Midwest is CHEAP compared with California in general. But, I have to agree with you about the Midwestern weather not being all that great. There's ALWAYS a trade-off, it seems.

I left CA...
I was raised (since age two) in California...Los Angeles to be exact. I relocated to Minneapolis just over a year ago and could not be happier! It was the BEST move I ever made. Minneapolis is a big, progressive city...I could buy a house here (something I could not do in my 30+ years in California), there's less traffic...and the quality of life is 10 fold better! CA can keep the weather...I like the seasons Minnesota offers. I wish more of my So Cal apartment dwelling friends (who pay $1200 a month for a 1 bedroom in a crappy neighborhood) would leave L.A./CA and try life somewhere else! Minneapolis and it's winters is not for everyone...but there are a lot of other great, dynamic, safe, affordable cities out there! I really don't know why people stay in L.A. so long? I find it rather depressing...
I am SOOOOO glad I escaped L.A....I only go back to visit family/friends but would never move back)!!

Ooops...one more thing!
My brother and his family moved to Minneapolis from L.A. prior to me moving here. The quality of the education system in L.A. is horrendous!! Switching to public elementary schools in Minnesota is better quality than PRIVATE schools in So Cal. It's amazing...the kids in Minnesota really do receive a quality education. It's very sad that California can't get it's education systems down! What is Governor Arnold doing for teachers exactly?

Actually, I would question what the California Teacher's Association is doing.

When I retire from the state in about three years we're moving east to get out of Sacramento and California in general, and we're both natives. For years my retirement plans have been ABC -- Anywhere But California!
I want to move back to America.

Other than cost I think CA is a great place to live and retire.

Curmudgeon, I'd do a lot of research before moving, especially if you are a native CA. I'm form the East coast, but i know other Californians who have moved away only to return sheepishly some years later. The weather and lifestyle are very seductive - more so than you probably realize.
Also, you should read those posts from The Mercury News that are on the front page of this site. You will see that many retirees are moving out of state, namely to other Sun Belt states. But some also to the midwest and Northeast. But, interestingly, so are thousands of illegals who had come to CA first, only to spread out all over the U.S., including the Midwest and East coast. Perhaps they feel it is getting too saturated in CA, and there are better opportunities elsewhere. You said you want to move back to America, so I don't know if that's what you meant. If so, I would do a lot of research as to current demographics on the city you wish to live, or better still, visit these forums and ask questions! Statistics don't tell the whole story, and are usually out-dated.

I moved to Sacramento 5 years ago from Upstate NY. In pursuit of what most people come out here for. The sun, the great weather, the lifestyle, the infinite things to do, and the beautiful landscape out here. Truly it's awesome. Northern California is an incredible place. However Sacramento has been losing its luster with me lately. It's getting way over crowded. Every house looks the same. It takes half an hour to go 5 miles up the street. Crime seems to be on the rise. And we all know the issues associated with the cost of living. Where I come from in NY, it's cheap to leave, houses look different, and there aren't sound walls holding developments on every square inch of the land. But in NY, the job market is poor, and the weather will put you in a 6 month depression. Every place has its good and bad. That I have learned for sure. I know I could not move back to NY, but I do know that Sacramento is pushing me out fast too. I think to my future. Kids. Who would want to raise kids here? Surely not me. Grow old here, I don't think so.
So in the next year or so, I'd like to relocate to Colorado somewhere. Never even been there, but I'm going to visit in the next few months. Try something new. Try something I might like! Good luck to all those in pursuit of places outside of here!
