Colorado
My cousin moved to Colorado Springs a couple of years ago and really loves it. A little too cold for me (I'm heading to western WA state). My cousin says that Colorado Springs does not get quite as cold as Denver and other parts and housing is reasonable. It's also a pretty area.
I can understand your feelings. I moved to Sacramento (actually Fair Oaks) about 40 years ago, and I can hardly believe it's the same place. Sacramento has good points, but the bad points really bite!

Thanks, L4H. We've been researching for the past couple of years. My family is from NY, MA and CT and I've spent a lot of time in New England. I've also lived in MN, twice each in VA and NC as well as AL, GA and KY. My wife has lived in AR and FL in the past.
Over the next three years we'll be doing a lot of travel to check prospective sites. As for the "spread" you mentioned, we've been keeping an eye on that as well.
I'll decidedly be coming here seeking the wisdom of other's experiences. Hopefully I can give back in some way.

I am a lifelong resident of CA. Born in Sacramento, raised in Manteca. My husband and I still live in Manteca with our 3 young boys.
We cannot wait to leave here. The schools are pathetic, we have a major problem with illegal immigration, we cannot afford housing (we were lucky enough to buy our house when prices were much lower in 2001; but we cannot afford to buy anything bigger and we need bigger!!!) I'm sick of the liberal agenda here, too.
My husband is actively seeking jobs in other states. We're hoping for Colorado.

I do not like Sacramento anymore either
It has gotten too crowded, road rage is a problem and there is a lot of air pollution and crime. I don't feel it is a good place to live anymore. I am retired and I want to live asap. I like humidity, less crime, less pollution and liberial, friendly people. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

When you say you like humidity, is this the hot kind or the cold kind? If it is the rainy cool kind of humidity, Olympia, WA would meet your needs. It's fairly liberal, much less crowded and expensive than Sac. The drivers are courteous and public transportation is safe. It's also a large enough town that services are available (even Macy's!!!), but it's not as much of a zoo as Sac.

When I moved here 5 years ago I thought it a great place to live as well. Now, I don't feel that way so much. The urban sprawl is nuts, I mean how do you tell your stucco house apart from the neighbors? Or how do you tell your neighborhood apart from the next one? THEY ALL LOOK THE SAME! The soundwall is a primal part of the landscape out here now. Driving anywhere here is downright ****ty. No one knows how to use that simple device known as a blinker that is so closely located to your hand when it's on the steering wheel. Oh wait, that's right, your hand isn't close to it. It's too busy with a phone in it shoved in your face while you are calling your 2,000 friends as you are either putting on make up or shaving your beard or reading the paper. I'm so sick of getting cut off and letting people in without them waving a simple thank you. They have the attitude as if you were SUPPOSED to let them in. The self-absorption is pretty high in this town. And yes the crime. Read the Sacbee and see how high the crime has gotten. It's the highest this year than it's been in 10 years. Hell my truck got broken into a month ago. No one says hi, everyone is closed off. I'm ready to get out. Colorado looks more and more appealing every day I wake up.

real estate taxes in Connecticut are cheaper then NJ or NY.
a 2000 square foot home here averages about 4K a year in taxes-
I am talking about a newer home 3-4 baths 2 baths basement on about an acre of land- that can be had for under 300K- try to buy that in CA for that amount of money- yeah the taxes are higher, but we have great schools, great local services and more.

Connecticut has great Thai food- within 6 miles of my house here in Vernon there are two great places -and in town here 'The Lotus' fantastic French Indochinese (Vietnamese) Also in town here 3 great Asian- two with great Japanese and incredible sushi. Italian- the best- with the best Pizza- locally we also have many Indian and other ethnic restaurants, including Reins Deli- the best place in New England for a New York Jewish Deli-
Some people from CA think that CA is the only place to get great Asian or other ethnic food- wrong. Also here are Brazilian, Portuguese, Tibetan and more.
