I actually made cookies for my new neighbors when we moved into our new home here and they looked at me crosseyed.

I'd say about 7-10 the whole summer, which runs from May to Sept. here. This year, there wasn't one 100 degree day in all of August, typically the hotest month. I don't know where you were living in Sac, but I think the people, for the most part, have a reputation for being down-to-earth, and the entire region is considered family-friendly. I hope you don't later regret your decision to move to the southeast. People who "cash out" of CA have a hard time returning, if they have "movers remorse". I know several former residents that this happened to.
I beg to differ. The actual heat may have been 111 - 112 but the heat index (thanks to the smog) hit 116. There are many days over 100 degrees in Sacramento and the hottest month is not August, it is July. Feel free to talk to Mark Finan of channel 3 reports. I know because I worked outside in that heat for 20 years and would be glued to the TV everday in the summers to see just how miserable I was going to be. Pretty sad when you have to pray for a delta breeze so you don't cook!
Sacramento has some nice people but nothing like the southern states of America. I was stationed in Texas and Georgia. Nicest folks I have ever met. EXTREMELY family oriented. California can't comprehend the extent of how the southern states cater to children and families. Matter of fact a lot of Cali's are relocating to the Carolinas, Georgia and Virginia because of the quality of life. Did you know that many communities in the south not only include a grassy park area like Cal but also include large pools and water slides as part of the subdivisions? I don't mean waterworld by a mall but in the subdivisions themselves. Good stuff.
Don't get me wrong, I love California. Tahoe (Ski Kirkwood!), Mendocino, San Diego, Santa Barbara, Yosemite, Joshua Tree, Monterey, Mount Shasta, the Redwoods and kayaking Coloma..all of my fond memories...the list goes on. BUT, I think California caters more toward the single person or married without kids. Many people successfully raise children in California but it doesn't mean that it caters to families. I have lived in North and Southern California and also the South. I would take the south or east coast anyday before Cal to raise my family.

That's one major reason I moved back to Southern California. The summer weather was just TOO hot (even though it's a dry heat, like they say in Phoenix). Actually, I didn't think 100 degrees in Sacramento wasn't that bad (I guess I got used to that, but over 105 was just too much).

Children in the South still call their parents "sir" and "ma'am" in many places there, if not all.

I agree. I happen to be a single person with no kids, and you're absolutely right about my particular demographic being catered to in California.

Last night I had dinner at my two youngest daughters' home and outside their door was a lovely plate of cookies with a card from neighbors who had just moved in and something for which my daughters will reciprocate. We and our neighbors here in Sacramento give one another homemade baked goods at Christmas and get together at other times of the year for dinners and BBQs.

Granted it's not as prevalent here in CA as back east and down south (where we're moving in about three years when I retire) but not all the niceties and neighborness are lost here.

Yes they still say sir and maam out here! It's a pleasanr change form hearing the teenagers elsewhere say "yeah" or "No"

When I was single California was perfect.

I have lived in many places including overseas. The nicest people I have ever met ( general population-not person specific ) were in the Southern states of America and Korea. There are good and friendly people everywhere. I met them at Pete's coffee all of the time but as a population folks are much nicer and more polite out here. I stillhave not had anyone flip the bird or lay on their horn. I have only heard once where someone honked at someone else. They usually honk when they are waving hello. It is DEFINITELY a different culture out here. Rudest place I have visited would be Wyoming.

Hope everyone had a nice Christmas.

I have to say that we all have our own comfort level and tolerance point when it comes to rudeness, so it's pointless to describe one place as polite/friendly, and one as not.

Also, I have lived in the Sac area for over 25 yrs. and have had, for the most part, very nice neighbors. There are mean people everywhere, and the South is no exception. Sac has changed a lot in the past ten years. As outsiders moved here from more populated areas, they brought their brusuqe manners, aquisitiveness, and other negative traits with them. But this will eventually happen in the south, as well. Maybe not as quickly, but with the influx of Northeasterners, and folks from CA, they will be worn down, and watch sadly as their cultural traditions slip away. Believe me, I wish it wasn't so, but that's life in America. Change is inevitable - for good and bad.

Default Sacramento is a great place to live

I have lived in Reno, Sacramento, Las Vegas, New Orleans, Cleveland, Iowa City, Binghamton, NY, Italy, France, Greece....and Sacramento is my favorite. I love the climate, and I'm so happy I don't have to worry about dangerous weather, my car spinning on the ice, or nasty sour people (upstate NY has quite a few of them...I lived there for 3 years after grad school). I'm more active in California than I ever was in the midwest or Northeast, because the weather is not a huge barrier.

I have lakes, rivers and wineries all around me, Monterey 3 hours away, and an amazing city 90 miles to the West. The people here are normal and nice. My best friends are from Iowa and New Jersey, but I am starting to make close friends with people who are from the Sacramento area.

Now that we're jobless, leaving CA is sounding better than ever. If we get a decent job offer elsewhere, we're outta here! Getting fired kind of opens up your possibilities, and gets you thinking about where you would REALLY like to live. Sorry to leave the family that's here, but kind of tired of things as they've been for so long. Time to change it up. And what about the family that lives out of CA? Time to share ourselves with them!

Thinking of OR, WA, VA....

Exclamation Leaving CA....

I lived outside of Sacramento CA in Roseville and couldn't wait to leave.
I hated the heat and the traffic.
I moved to Coeur d'Alene Idaho in June and now really appreciate what I did have. If you are looking to move to Northern Idaho be prepared for constant cloudy days in the winter (I really miss the sun!) and the people here are lets just say a little slower paced. There are many Californians that move here most like it but some I believe are just stuck here now, and a few we have met can't wait to leave.
The summers are wonderful warm days and cool nights.
The shopping is non-existant, you can drive to Spakane Valley for an OK mall but no Roseville Galleria for sure. And I hope you don't like to dine out because there is not much of that either.I have been to Spokane a few times and didn't really like it, pretty dirty city and the crime rate is pretty high as well.
My suggestion is that you visit here multiple time before moving, there are some very nice homes but unlesss you are wanting to spend at least 400k you will not get the nice neighborhood to go with it. Many neighborhoods have a real lack of caring about their landscaping and many homes here have vinyl siding (yes the plastic siding that is on motor homes) that really doesn't improve the area.
We actually had someone say to us that if you landscape your backyard you must have more money than brains, that should give you a little insight about how some think here.
Don't get me wrong the lakes are wonderful, downtown Coeur d'Alene is great in the summer, but I would much rather visit here than live here.
We are on our way out, now we just need to find a new place.
Hope this helped good luck!
