The time has come for us to leave NYC. We are a middle-aged couple with a 12 yr old daughter adopted from China. We want to move to the Sacremento area. We would love advise as to good middle school and high school. We are concerned about diversity-would like our daughter not to be the only Asian face in the school. As we are older, we are also concerned about fitting in. Any advise or recommendations? What are good schools in Sac and surrounding area? What are good places to buy a home? Any input would be very appreciated. Thank you.

As far as your daughter being the only Asian face in school, don't worry about it. All of Sac is so diverse. There are large populations of Asians all around the area. If money is not much of a concern for housing, look into Folsom, El Dorado Hills, Roseville, and Granite Bay. They all will be some of a commute to downtown. Closer places are Fair Oaks Cameron Park and Midtown. You'll get plenty of help from other posters. Good luck.

Default thank you

thank you for the info. I really appreciate it. Are there any good areas in Sac proper that have good middle and high schools? As you get further out--like to Shingle Springs and/or Placerville, is there some diversity and good schools, too?

Sacramento and all of the foothill areas have lots of Asians and Asian/Americans. Sacramento and the immediate area have one of the highest number of people of Chinese ancestry due to so many coming to CA to work first in the mines and then staying in the area and opening other businesses. A person I used to work with (he retired) adopted two little girls from China.

The schools in south Sac and Sac proper are tough schools. All of the middle and high schools in the Cameron Park/Shingle Springs/Diamond Springs area are good schools. You can check out schools on the CA Dept. of Education Web site at California Department of Education. Look under Data Quest for demographic information and Ed Data for testing data.

If you don't want to head out to the foothills, Del Campo in Fair Oaks, Mira Loma in Orangevale, Rio Americano in Sacramento Co., Elk Grove High, and a couple of others are good schools for public schools. All will have diversity, but as you get further into the foothills, the general population will get more conservative and more White. I'm pretty liberal and live in El Dorado Co. and feel comfortable living here. Except for the rare idiots, most people are pretty tolerant in and around Sac.

And the great news is you are one of the few people (coming from NYC) that won't faint when you see the price of housing!

Default thanks so much

Hi KidBlue and Volleyballer-thank you so much for your input. I really appreciate the links to the education websites. We have been looking at real estate online and you are right--it is so expensive in NYC that we weren't shocked by high prices in Cal. We will be in the area for a week 8/1-8/8 and will do some scouting around. Thanks again. Best to both of you.

Default Folsom

I am a retired teacher. My married son lives in Folsom, CA. We have visited many times and everyone I talk with say the schools in Folsom are excellent. Both my son and his wife are college grads and they are quite happy with the schoolsystem in Folsom.

Default Bring sun block and a fan!

Coming to Sacramento in August will be a true test of your heat tolerance. It's going to be 100 today, but should get down to the low 90's this weekend (freezing ). Good luck on your search!

I would look in a few areas, Rocklin, Folsom, Fair Oaks and El Dorado Hills. If looking in the hills area make sure you check the properties you are considering for "naturally occurring asbestos." These areas all have good schools and great shopping areas.

Are you planning on working in the Sacramento area? Knowing that will help you in getting a good recommendation on where to buy a house. If you are working downtown Sac, you may not want to be so far out.

Default Thanks to everyone

We leave for Sac tomorrow. The sunblock is packed It gets pretty hot in NYC, too, and it's also very humid...We are really excited to check out the area. Thanks so much for your help. It is really appreciated.
We will need to work when we get to Cal., but are open as to what and where. We are interested in Folsom, Fair Oaks and possibly El Dorado Hills, but not so interested in just a ' bedroom community'.We hadn't heard about Rocklin, but will check that out, too. We also want to look at Placerville, Shingle Springs and Diamond Springs. We figure we'll just spend some time in each town and see what it's like. This is the beginning of the process for us and very exciting. We are really happy and excited to have made the decision to leave NY for Cal.
You guys are just great and have done alot to dispel our nervousness about such a huge life change.
