When I lived in Orange County I was amazed that you could drive for miles and miles and still be in a safe, upper middle class area. Even in Los Angeles you can live in an entirely nice region many miles away from the bad part of the city. In Sac, it's almost the reverse. The entire city is more on the dumpy side with a few nice pockets scattered within the
I just moved from Los Angeles I lived in Encino and Rancho Dominguez and went to Aliso Viejo Orange County every other weekend and worked in West LA on the borderline of Santa Monica & Brentwood and believe me it is the same thing.....one block is nice the next block is rowdy and riddled with gangs
just this year on the supposedly good part (West LA) were I worked right after new years at 7:30 am my whole work area streets were blocked off because someone from a gang got into a shoot-out with the police and someone ending up dying I don't know wether it was the gang member or a police officer but it was like
Hollywood and Santa Monica looks like one big dump to me a lot of people who did drugs waaayyy baaaack when.... still walking around like Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds and Mushrooms ( they're gone) bi-polar schizo or whatever you want to call it ...
You just cannot escape the gang activity out in LA it's all over the place.......now when I went to Calabassas or Hidden Hills it was a different story (very beautiful, elegant) ...but Beverly Hills seems like another dump to me very shabby did you ever notice all the homes around the Beverly Hills Country Club have bars around them like the residents are in prison....and too many large homes McMansions from the 30's and 40's have been turned into mini indoor aprtment complexes.......(yuck) and the inside of them are small and the rent is like $1,200.00 starting for a studio apartment with no kitchen but a hot plate/ no shower but a communal shower you share with other residents...... (yuck)
Save the drama on Southern California ...Sacramento has issues like other cities but to me come out smelling like roses as far as Los Angeles is concerned.

North Highlands is really not that bad. I don't live there, and never have, but i have quite a few friends who do or did, and i've been there many times. Seriously, all it is is alot of talk because people want you to think they're 'tough' or whatnot. Sure, there's police sirens every night and search helicopters every other night, but i don't know anyone who's been attacked, mugged, killed, raped, shot at, etc etc. The cops are vigilant and tough. Most of the neighborhoods are actually pretty nice.

Oh yes, and one more thought- on gang activity. GANGS?!?!?! As much talk about Nortengos, Crips, Bloods [however you spell them], and however many teenagers like to say they're one of those gangs, THEYRE NOT. Gangs like that are virtually dead. End of story.

Sacramento is not ghetto but some people who live here are. The people who aren't out number the people who are.

What do you mean by ghetto? If you mean a poor area inhabited by predominantly a minority group, no Sacramento is not ghetto. Sacramento is a diverse city but it's far from being a ghetto. Sacramento is nice compared to the rest of the Central Valley.

Excuuuussse Me Please!
Maybe when people give their opinions on areas they should explain what they picture when they think ghetto. It might help give you a better idea of who you should take advice from.
Wow! different times for different folks....
However, I grew up in San Jose East Foothills and I never saw anything like what you described......however, maybe I am a little older than you but my neighborhood was filled with hard working parents who kept the front lawns mowed and manicured to perfection and did not a holiday go by when the front lawn was not decorated with some kind of holiday decoration..........
I mean I guess I grew up in San Jose when you did not have to worry about rat, tat tat..gunshots going down or disrespecful people with 50 million cars parked all over the front lawns
the only thing that worried the police officers was the Low-Riders habitual Sunday Night cruise from White & Story Road down the strip to King & Story roads..... pheww!
I would rather go live in my old East Side San Jose neighborhood rather than stay in the Sacramento area but I cannot afford to.......
Sacramento is alright...all depends on whatnyou call ghetto......there is no half condemned apartment complexes people are still trying to live in or a whole area of crack/.meth drugs takeover......it has its share of crime like any other Capitol City in the US .....I hear where the White House is located is much worse.....anyways
I don't like the area because they pay you peanuts here...the work pay sucks..unless you work for the County/Government or and Engineer or something like that........

Sacramento is perfect for every age group. You can raise a married and raising a family or you can be single. It is a combination of city and nature, lots of trees, rivers and sky scrapers.
Like any other city, it has its bad neighborhoods and its good neighborhoods. I see some people mentioned the south area but some parts are very peaceful to live in, including the fast growing Elk Grove. Up to a couple of years, West Sacramento was considered a "bad area" to live in but there are new developments that make it much more beautiful. It is one of the fastest growing cities in the state.
